And to make sure the event is fun for all ages, the haunted trail gets a little scarier toward the end, so parents with younger children can choose to veer off.

“The whole point is to make it family friendly, so we decided that one part of the trail would be scarier than another part,” Flaherty said. “We’ll have a trail guide telling families that it gets scarier from that point forward if they want to keep walking.”

Flaherty said people should register in advance to make sure they have enough food and craft materials. People can still come the day of the event, but they can only walk the haunted trail and do a wagon ride for $1 each.

And it wouldn’t be a Sussex event without donations and participation from local businesses. Almost all of the volunteers are from , the Sussex Leos Club and .

Also, M&I Bank is sponsoring the event, along with Sussex Patch, which is donating supplies and helping with pumpkin decorating, and the , which is running the wagon ride.
