A look back at the top headlines from Sussex Patch in 2011.

As 2011 comes to a close, Sussex Patch looks back at the top stories of the year, month by month. Here’s a recap of the news that made headlines in Sussex.

Talk about a happy Memorial Day. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office increased its patrols during the Memorial Day weekend to ensure that the lakefront and parks were free from crime and disorder. According to a press release, five perpetrators were arrested and 59 were issued citations for various violations of the law. In addition, the Multi-Jurisdictional OWI Task Force arrested 23 drunken drivers between Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 4 a.m.

Those of us who weren't being pulled over by Milwaukee police were at Sussex's Memorial Day parade! The parade was held on Main Street from Waukesha Avenue, to the VFW past Village Hall. There were clowns, candy and marching bands. It was a great celebration!

A headline like this certainly couldn't escape our "Best Of" list. A 46-year-old Sussex man was charged with a felony and faces up to six years in prison after authorities say he stole a large display cookie from a bakery in the Town of Delafield. He was facing up to six years and nine months in prison, and $20,000 in fines because he jumped bail.

It was in May that the school district took a major chunk out of its budget, and in turn, taking a major chunk out of the tax bill. The total budget was set at $48.2 million, which compares to $50.2 million in the 2010-11 school year. That's a 4 percent decrease in spending.

Every student in the area took a hard lesson from these Menomonee Falls students after they got into some pretty major trouble on social media. Two were expelled for a year while three other students were handed suspensions for a Facebook conversation that appeared to threaten a teacher who was not named.
