Hamilton School Board Approves New Math Curriculum

Program aims at improving algebra skills by high school.

A new math curriculum in the Hamilton School District is designed to better prepare students for algebra by the time they reach high school.

The Hamilton School Board voted unanimously Monday to adopt the new program.

Administrators said the new curriculum is also designed to better prepare students for academic and professional success.

“They’re designed to be robust and relevant,” said Katherine Little, district instructional technology and assessment coordinator. “(They're) designed to be specific about both of those.”

While kindergarten through fifth-grade students will concentrate on the foundations of math with real world applications, sixth grade through senior year math curriculum will be realigned to meet the skill levels of students.

The changes are part of common core standards approved by 42 states in the country, which have fewer but much deeper learning standards for students in math.

According to district documents, the program uses an "I Can" goal-setting approach to more clearly outline what students should expect to learn. Little said the “I Can" statements were designed through collaboration among district teachers.

“I think that’s just fantastic,” said board member Deborah Briggs.
