Trawicki Suggests More Safety Service Consolidation

Sheriff says he wants to meet with Sussex, Town of Lisbon and Village of Merton to discuss more consolidation efforts after Lisbon's incorporation push is settled.

After the Town of Lisbon incorporation issue is settled, talks might begin on consolidating more emergency services with Sussex.

Waukesha County Sheriff Dan Trawicki told the Sussex Public Safety and Welfare Committee Thursday he would like to hold talks with the village, Lisbon and Village of Merton to find more opportunity to consolidate police services among the communities.

“It’s really in the best interest of the communities involved to discuss this,” he said. “So let’s sit down in a committee and talk and let this see where this consolidation can go.”

Trawicki raised the issue of further consolidation of police services among communities due to discussions of the need for another third shift officer to patrol the area. Currently there are no third-shift officers in Lisbon and one in Sussex, who responds to the town for emergency calls only.

One possible solution is a shared third-shift officer between the two communities.

The issue might warrant further discussion if Lisbon incorporates as a village because state law dictates incorporated areas must provide 24-hour police services.

Committee Chair Jim Batzko said he’s also open to the idea and said the village’s public safety building is an example of how it can work.

“This building was built with the idea of consolidation in mind,” he said.

Village President Greg Goetz, who didn’t attend the meeting but had talked with Trawicki, also said he’s open to the idea of sharing more services with Lisbon in order to save money for both communities.
