Big Changes, Little Impact

Although Sussex will have eight wards instead of 22 next year, voters will barely notice a difference.

Despite redistricting and a significant drop of the number of wards in Sussex, voters won’t notice any differences when they go to the polls next year.

Village Clerk Susan Freiheit said Sussex has eight wards under the new redistricting plan, which is down from 22 because the village now has more than 10,000 residents and can have larger wards. However, all of the village will remain in the 99th Assembly District and 33rd Senate District and only one ward will reside outside the Hamilton School District.

All voting will continue to take place at the , so voters will only see a difference in what lines they will stand in when they go to vote.

“If they’re in the wrong lines, we’ll scoop them into their right lines,” she said. “We’ll make sure they’re all in the right places.”

Although the village resides entirely within its current Senate and Assembly districts, the northern border of Sussex was used to draw the configurations of state legislative districts, so if properties currently located in Town of Lisbon are annexed into the village, they will be within separate state legislative districts.

Freiheit said there are no changes for voters in the and the one ward outside of that district will be in the Richmond School District.
