Sussex Salting Crews Covering Entire Village

Sunday's arrival of a sleet, freezing rain and snow mix has produced a full-scale salting operation ahead of additional snow.

Sussex snowplow trucks filled to the brim with road salt hit the streets Sunday for a full-scale salting operation "that will reach every single street in the village," according to Department of Public Works Operations Superintendent Dave Greengo.

Greengo said all six of the community's drivers were called in between 10 and 10:30 a.m., each person assigned to complete a two- to three-hour route.

When those are done, "we'll assess what the storm is doing and what is forecast for the rest of the afternoon and evening," he said, "then likely bring everyone back in at 2 a.m. Monday to accomplish an overnight plowing operation in time for morning drive time."

Asked how the village's supply of salt is holding out given so many small storms this winter, Greengo said: "We're still in good shape yet."

A reminder to stay far back from plow trucks, which can stop suddenly or make abrupt turns and movements. If you can't see the truck's side mirrors on the doors of the cab, the driver has no way of knowing you are there.
