Apparently there is room in this town for the both of them.
While Quad/Graphics focuses on massive printing orders, has made its niche dealing with customers of all sizes.
Regardless of how large the printing job, chances are Special Editions can handle it. It's precisely this trait that its owner believes distinguishes Special Editions from its competition.
“Probably, most of our uniqueness (in Sussex) is because of the range of what we can do,” said president and owner Brandon Esser. “We do go down to the small printer size as well as all the way up to what the large printers are doing. I don’t think other printers in Sussex can do the full range of what we do.”
Established in Milwaukee in 1993, the business moved to Sussex in 2002.
Special Editions employs 15 people and operates on a 10,000-square-foot building at N56W24619 N. Corporate Circle. It features four presses and a full-service bindery, offering a full range of printing capabilities.
“We do anything from short-run digital printing all the way up to full-size, full-color annual reports, and point-of-purchase materials," Esser said. "Anything from business cards to that.”
In addition to its various services, the company is committed to serving its customers with a high level of attention. While the economy has put other businesses into the position of cutting back in some areas to decrease expenses, Esser says Special Editions has been more than holding its own.
“We’ve been doing well and we’ve been consistent,” he said. “I just kind of like the small-town atmosphere that Sussex has. Plus, I live really close and there’s easy access from Milwaukee and Madison."
As is the case for any business, the only real constant is change. With the explosion of digital technology, the applications for the printing industry offer tremendous promise for the future.
That promise is certainly good news for Esser and his company.
“Just some of the new technologies with all of the digital printing are exciting,” said Esser. “It looks like we are going to be investing more into that. For our clients, it means more options.”
