Miracle of miracles, I agree with you, Keith Best. There may well be a GOP President elected in 2016. But not if you run someone like Scott Walker. Take Ann Coulter's advice and nominate Chris Christie. That way you won't send the Independents screaming into the night.

On the article How Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch Juggles Career with Motherhood

@Bob McBride -- Considering our discussion yesterday? I'm happy Ms. Kleefisch caught her cancer early and that she's willing to be open about it. But, recall there were working parents like me, with no health insurance and low income, who wouldn't have been so lucky.
As for balancing children and career, isn't that the expectation for everyone nowadays?

Yes, it's a shock to lose your employer-based insurance and find out what it's like to be on your own, especially if you're a person of mature years. And i guess I'd rather be in the federal pool (which is really only a group of insurance options with some premium support and limits on costs) than the choppy ocean I've been drowning in for a long time now.
People were losing their insurance already. Co-pays and contributions were going up already. Short of doing away with health insurance entirely, which would force prices down a lot, putting an end to the uneven and spotty coverage is the only way to go about it.
And sorry -- no way am I having a colonoscopy awake. I've had eye surgery awake, so I'm no coward, but I draw the line.

First of all, Bob, I'm sorry you're being thrust into the "pool". I'd ask, 'what pool?' since Wisconsin is not participating. But that's neither here nor there. I've been uninsured for so long that even a pool looks inviting. Heck, even BadgerCare Plus looked inviting few years ago when we got stuck on the waiting list.
All I'm after is not going bankrupt if circumstances force me to spend time in a hospital. I'm not looking to run to a doctor every week or finally be able to get that long postponed colonoscopy.

On the article Non-Fiscal Items in State Budget Draw Flak

Reply"Among other things, Walker’s budget would ease state regulation on rent-to-own companies, remove a ban on foreigners buying up large chunks of Wisconsin land, create a new charter school oversight board, disallow wolf hunting at night, and name a Milwaukee crime lab after a former Milwaukee County prosecutor."
How are any of these 'budgetary'? Although the first two are definitely business-friendly. I suppose it's the consumer's own fault for being unable to spot usury, but how is this a good idea?

@Lyle -- Poorly conceived trade policy can really muck up the domestic economy and skew the balance of power in the favor of management vs. labor. When that happens, you cannot blame displaced workers for being unemployed or underemployed.
" For example; the 'welfare queens' under AFDC were actually less expensive than after the welfare reforms."
Bingo! How many of the people commenting here understand that? Of course, that policy did create generational social dysfunction. Even we ;liberals' acknowledge that. But how do you fix that? Certainly not by tightening the eligibility for programs designed to make work a possibility. All that does is hurt the folks who have half a chance of making it out of that generational poverty.

@Mr.Lundt -- I beg to differ. You were the one who misrepresented my position by insisting I had a poor grasp of welfare fraud (and the Obama administration thrown in for effect), when I questioned the effectiveness of the Governor's 'reforms'. So who's the one with the straw man here?

Here's the thing --If someone can show me that Gov. Walker's cuts are targeted directly at fraud in the system, then yes, he could brag how he's reduced cost to the taxpayers AND reduced dependence. However, checking for fraud would actually cost us more money, as it takes manpower to do the checking. And it seems the cuts have gone toward tightening eligibility for some programs, which will hurt precisely those working poor who ARE trying to raise themselves out of poverty.
@Impeach Now -- Yes, there are many people in this state who are physically capable of working, but the jobs are simply not there for them. I'm tired of hearing that the papers are full of jobs. They are either low-paying service jobs that may require some governmental support in the form of food stamps and Medicaid, or they are tech jobs that require some form of training/higher education, and that, again, requires some form of educational grant if you come from the sort of 'dependent' family situation that can barely make ends meet much less establish a college fund.

"What sort of arrogant, smarm, jackarse derides someone for spelling leach vs leech on a blog,"
The flip side of the sort of arrogant, smarm, jackarse who thinks he can call other people inferior and remain credible. Sometimes it makes sense to pause and reflect before you type a post and hit 'submit'.
By the way, spell-check wouldn't have caught that.

"We are now seeing that at no time was the Obama Administration aware of what the Obama Administration was doing when it comes to all of the scandals."
No more than County Executive Scott Walker was aware of his employees campaigning from his office, the secret router, and two of his appointees embezzling from veterans. Probably best not to use that argument in the future.
