I would be really surprised if campus security doesn't have a set of binoculars of their own, considering what goes on in some of those dorm rooms.

ReplyUsing binoculars to look through an unshaded window from a public area might be in poor taste, but it's hardly a crime. Don't the police do that all the time without warrants?

ReplyUsing binoculars to look through an unshaded window from a public area might be in poor taste, but it's hardly a crime. Disorderly Conduct has become a catch all charge for police officers who are too lazy to try to figure out if any particular behaviour that they don't approve of violates any state law.

@Mr Lundt, the prison population has been more than doubled since 1990 and people are still driving drunk... Perhaps we need to try something new as opposed to repeating all the stuff we did that didn't work out before. I'm not sure what you mean by "feel good" treatment programs but I am guessing you mean that alternatives to prison (public transportation, safe ride programs, etc) are not vindictive and spiteful enough for you?

We've already got more people in prison by % of population than Stalin ever came close to. How's that working out?
It seems that some folks are still under the misguided belief that more prisons are the answer to all their hopes and dreams...

@Lyle. And what a king he was! :)
I can see your plan preventing some older workers from being laid off from the jobs they have right now, but it seems it would also further discourage employers from hiring anyone over the age of 55. Under your plan, a younger worker who doesn't work out in the job remains a potential $10k liability while someone over 55 would become a potential 20,30,40 or even 50 thousand dollar liability. Who would want to risk hiring anyone who carries with them that type of liability. I consider this plan well intentioned yet counter-productive to its goals.
A better way to get people working again would be to return to our principles and stop trading with commies and slave traders. China is one giant communist slave labor camp and we're better off without their 'help'. Manufacturing of consumer goods is virtually non-existent in the US now and all those high tech manufacturing robots are idle since slaves are cheaper than robots it seems.

ReplyWe need jobs, not seniority on unemployment. Furthermore Lyle, your plan does not address who will pay for the extended unemployment benefits that you would apply to these older workers. In the current system the employer must repay unemployment wages paid to laid off workers-- up to $10,000 per laid off employee and doubling or tripling that for older workers would make the older worker even more of a potential liability for the business and in all likelyhood cause businesses to shy away from hiring them even more so.

ReplyI think it's an excellent idea to build these things on Summit Ave. Enticing the disabled to come to Waukesha is a VERY noble cause.
