@c Good point --- after all WE do pay for their stadiums !!! And the movie industry gets tons of tax breaks from US --- and the Big Money they make is over the public airways on TV and regulated cable services --- I wouldn't say though to tax the individual players, but tax the teams on the gross revenue they receive from TV, Cable, Closed Broadcasts, DVDS and whatever other media --- that money could be used percentage wise on their stadiums (much as truckers pay a fuel tax so they have roads to drive on) --- and as a byproduct, they won't be able to pay players hundreds of millions of dollars, but only millions of dollars.

@AA I am sure we could debate the fine points of Welsh's tenure -- I don't disagree that he did do many things right --- but he also didn't get the nickname Neutron Jack for nothing -- and no matter what he did, his main concern in my opinion was for himself.

As for IH -- yes there is Navistar -- it is but a pathetic remnant of what was once a great company with a much larger market share and much more diverse product offerings.

The war being waged against Milwaukee by Walker and the Republicans is the classic cutting off the nose to spite the face.

And WHY??? What is there to gain by them destroying the largest city in Wisconsin, and the Heart of Wisconsin's economy ?

    1) Destroy the unions that did NOT contribute to their political coffers.
    2) Destroy the public schools through the war on the unions and the expansion of voucher schools.
    3) Deny Milwaukee its light rail revitalization program.
    4) Wage war on the Milwaukee County Government.
    5) Divert foreclosure settlement money intended for Milwaukee to the State.
    6) Actively work to destroy housing values and tax base with putting an end to Residency requirements in the budget bill (questionable if legal).

The one action that Walker took that might have shown some promise was the restructuring of the WDC ---- alack and alas, Walker choose to Chair that commission himself, and appointed lackies and no nothings to run it. QUESTION: Will Walker now step up and take full responsiblity for the WDC lack of controls, illegal expenditures, and miserable results ???

The answers to Lyle's question are complex and not easy and I am not pretending to be proposing them here.

What I am proposing is that instead of the far left and far right comments about government involvement in the economy and business --- Reality Check --- they are and have always been intertwined --- they depend upon each other working with each other!

In Wisconsin, we are seeing the kind of management of our economy that fits in with the tear down and destroy model.

Walker and the Republicans turn away about a Billion Dollars in a Luddite aversion to a new technology known as fast rail. They turn away Millions and Millions more in protest against Obamacare and incur more costs for us in what our medical costs will be. They borrow money now to build new roads that our klds will be paying for until they die, They take settlement money for the destruction of neighborhoods in the foreclosure fiasco and put it in the general fund, instead of using it proportionately for those who suffered the most, and for who the money was intended (precedent set by the pilfering of the tobacco settlement money). Now they are actively working to weaken our environmental laws for the fast buck of mining finite resources, and a very pithy return of job development in exchange, if not a negative, if the degradation of our streams and lakes and forests is considered with its lessened tourism, fishing and hunting dollars.

All of that considered, the worse sins of Walker and the Republicans are those they are committing in a blatant attempt to destroy Milwaukee !!!!!

Why so called Republicans are in favor of over-riding local control for a centralized approach in governing Milwaukee is befuddling at best.

Over the years we have witnessed many good and solid companies that were stripped of their assets and liquidated because there was more profit to be made in selling what was built, than in continuing to run it.

That may make good sense in a micro economic sense for the raiders who buy up and chop up those companies -- but it is also a one time deal --- quick money made for a few, and no jobs or continuing operations contributing to the community.

I have also seen good and solid companies that became mere whispers of what they once were, due to incompetent management -- case in point, International Harvester was decimated by a CEO who thought it was more important to fight the unions than work with them --- everybody lost.

At the present time, we see the enormous greed of management in many companies --- CEO's in the US making 380 times or more the average wage in the companies they run -- nowhere else in the world does that happen as matter of course as it does here in the USA. Like the old westerns in which the town folk hire a gun slinger to help them beat off the bad guys -- they end up hostage to someone who could care less about them --- it is all about him. Neutron Jack is a perfect example of this kind of CEO --- Lee Iacocca may be an example of the opposite.

  • On the article Trustee Don Ford Resigns from Shorewood Village Board

I don't remember Ford doing anything during his time on the board that is worth mentioning --- and the absence of his notable accomplishments conspicuous by their absence would seem to verify that.

I don't think that it is necessary for the 3 musketeers to contemplate how best and when to fill his vacancy -- I doubt his absence will be noticed, and I very much doubt that the board would ever want someone appointed who would have an original idea or not simply be a Get Along n Go Along Member.

@Lyle I am neither calling for Israel's demise or the US abandoning Israel.

I am in favor of fairness for all concerned, as best as possible in the current situation.

I think the solution has to be an international one, and that it need to be imposed upon both Israel and the Palestinians. A good indicator would be a solution that neither side is totally happy with, but can live with.

I mentioned before in a posting that I believe since the Middle East is so concentric to strife throughout the world, I would propose that Jerusalem be an International City, not under the control of the Israelis or the Palestinians --- a perfect solution in my opinion would be moving the UN headquarters from NYC to Jerusalem --- that would put it under International Control and provide equality for all parties interested in practicing their particular faith within its boundaries, conducting commerce, etc.

Concurrently the Israelis would have to pull back to their former borders and the Palestinians would be autonomous.

The only way that could work would be for disarmnament of all parties --- and giving military protection from the International Community --- not free, but paid for by taxes for their protection.

I am not holding my breath for any of this to happen.

@Lyle Thank you for your lengthy response.

However, you make assumptions throughout that because there were Jews there 2000+ years ago, they have the right to reclaim what they had left --- logically, Native Americans should be able to occupy Shorewood --- knock down your house and your neighbors houses and build a settlement.

Yes the Jews have suffered at the hands of many --- so have many others, remember the Cambodians we left hanging to dry and the millions that died in the killing fields -- the second largest group that the Nazi's killed enmasse were the Polish -- and the Turks and the Armenians, and on and on and on ........

Every wrong can not be righted --- reparations for the Blacks brought over as slaves anyone ???

You also left out that it was the British Evangelicals who created Israel as they wanted the Chosen People in the Promised Land for the Second Coming of Christ to occur.

Israel is our greatest ally in the Middle East --- only because everybody else there is so pissed off at our supporting their expansion.

And for the record, as I mentioned before, to the best of my knowledge, I have Christian, Jewish and Muslim ancestors in my heritage.

As for me --- I prefer not to put a name on God --- too many people kill over those Naming Rights !

@Lyle I have followed your threads hoping to find some brilliance that has been overlooked.

When I view it overall, I come to the conclusion that you suffer from the common disease of many academics --- you can cite facts, figures, theories, and sources, but do so to reinforce a position that you already had, and don't know how to apply any solutions to any of your perceived problems.

Underlying the entire thread has been your emphasis on Christians and Muslims --- and you seem to blame all the religious angst at their doorsteps --- using only the extremists of the two faiths as your examples.

What is most prominent by its absence is any mention of Judaism or Israeli military expansion.

You mention that the radical Christians use voucher schools and tax dollars to further their agenda. And you talk about Muslim theocracies.

You fail to mention that Israel is only in existence because of US taxpayer dollars that support it financially and militarily. You also fail to mention that Israel none too subtle expansion into the Palestinian territories and its coveting of Jerusalem as its own, fuels the fires of the Middle East conflicts, hate between Muslims and Christian extremists, and terrorism that spreads around the globe and onto our own soil as a result.

Israel pretends to be a democracy, but the waddle of the duck is there and a theocracy in practical terms is what it is, and it is our government money that enables it to thrive and expand.

  • On the article 5 Car Break-ins Overnight on Monday

    David Tatarowicz

    12:36 pm on Friday, May 3, 2013

As for how would police know if someone taking something out of a car should be there or not --- I think you will find that most of the offenders are either riding bikes --- probably not their car --- or if the police see them wandering around the neighborhood -- which they could notice if they were patrolling --- they may catch them in the act.

It is also obvious that offenders do not want to get caught, and they will avoid areas in which police are actively patrolling.

As for locking you car -- sounds simple, but in reality not necessarily a viable option.

If you leave a laptop on a seat in open view --- it takes 1 second to break your window and take it --- gone !!! and you have a broken window !!

I learned a long time ago that if there is nothing of value inside, locking your door may only result in a broken window for no good reason. If there is something of value inside locking your door would be prudent, as long as something of value that is worth breaking a window is not in plain view.

And by the way -- patrols not only help with car breakins --- but also Home Invasions and garage breakins.

If patrols are useless, than we don't need so many patrol cars, do we?
