New State Law Requires Carbon Monoxide Detectors

In addition to a smoke alarm, you also must now have a device to detect this tasteless, odorless gas by Feb . 1.

As of Tuesday, Wisconsin will require all single-family and two-unit homes, whether new or existing, to install a carbon monoxide detector on every level of living space and near sleeping areas.  Homes under construction will be required to hard-wire detectors with a battery backup.  Existing homes may choose to install any type of detector - battery only, plug-in only, or plug-in with battery backup.  All detectors should bear the Underwriters Laboratories Inc. mark and be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions. Carbon monoxide detectors are only required in new or existing homes that have a fuel-burning appliance, including a stove, oven, grill, clothes dryer, furnace, boiler, hot water heater, fireplace/heater.  …
