After cancelling the public hearing, the village board officially voted to end discussion on the business park behind Shopko and Kohl’s.
The plan to begin development on a new business park in Sussex is officially dead after Village Board members voted to end the project during Tuesday night’s board meeting. This comes after Village Administrator Jeremy Smith announced the cancellation of Wednesday’s public hearing pertaining the project, as well as his professional recommendation to kill the development plan. The swift end to the potential corporate park comes after preliminary costs came in more than $1 million more than anticipated. Sussex Village President Greg Goetz spoke about the project during the meeting, explaining that while TIF districts run by the village have meant hundreds of millions of dollars in tax base, jobs and economic diversity, this project fell …

New report looks at municipal spending and debt in 2010, and Sussex took home the big prize of being the most frugal community in Patch's coverage area. But where does its debt stand?
A handful of villages and cities in the Milwaukee metro area considerably outpaced their fellow municipalities when it came to spending and debt levels in 2010, according to a new report from the nonpartisan Wisconsin Taxpayer Alliance. However, when it comes to how much communities spend on operations, Sussex took the grand prize for pinching pennies. The village ranked the most frugal among the 18 Milwaukee-area communities in Patch's coverage area with $499 per capita in 2010. The numbers come at no surprise after the Hamilton School District was also ranked one of the most frugal school districts in the Milwaukee metro. But with the recent uptick of large-scale projects in the quickly expanding suburb, some may still be surprised …

Town leaders attempt to make case for consolidation with Sussex during informational meeting Tuesday.
More than 100 Town of Lisbon residents voiced their concerns Tuesday regarding a possible consolidation with the Village of Sussex during an informational meeting held by town leader. After Town Chairman Matt Gehrke made a 90-minute presentation that made a case for moving forward with exploring a possible merger, several residents indicated their opposition to the plan. "When you look at (consolidation) with Sussex, the tax base goes up, their taxes go down; my taxes go up. It doesn't compute," said town resident Dennis Manthy. "I've lived here for 35 years and the Town of Lisbon is the Town of Lisbon." Gehrke noted the current the property tax rate in Lisbon is $3.09 per $1,000 of assessed value. It would increase to about $3.50 per $1,…

The Lisbon Town Board says it wants to wait until after Wednesday night's public forum to endorse the Sussex-Lisbon merger.
The Lisbon Town Board members postponed a vote on whether or not they endorse a potential merger with Sussex, saying they would prefer to vote after Lisbon’s public forum on Wednesday, according to the Sussex Sun. The Hamilton Fine Arts Center will host the public forum at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, open to anyone interested in learning more about the potential merger. During Monday night’s meeting in Lisbon, Town Chairman Matt Gehrke outlined various reasons why the town should negotiate with Sussex officials about a merger. However, Gehrke said he and the other Lisbon Town Board members would drop the idea of a consolidation if voters struck down the merger during the upcoming August 14 referendum. The entire reasoning behind the potential …

The Bugline Trail paving project is going full-steam ahead, and that means laying asphalt straight through the Mammoth Springs/Cannery Crossing without waiting for development issues to be worked out.
With development at Mammoth Springs – formerly known as Cannery Crossing – moving along at a snail's pace, representatives with Waukesha County say they're not waiting for the green light to lay asphalt on the Bugline Trail straight through the property. Dave Burch, Waukesha County's enterprise operations manager, says he's through with waiting, and he hasn't heard any news Mammoth Springs is close to development. "The village has been working on plans to redevelop that for decades, and the county owns the right-of-way that cuts right through that property," Burch said. "If we waited for them, which we currently are, it could case a big delay in paving the Bugline. We haven't even seen any final plans yet... If they had everything …

Village officials are answering some key questions they received during the last Village Board meeting regarding the new corporate park behind Kohls.
Although the Sussex Village Board gave the green light to begin the process of purchasing 120 acres of land for a new corporate park, some Sussex and Lisbon residents were left with questions. During the June 12 Village Board meeting, local citizens stood at the podium and asked board members a list of questions about the possible development near Highway 164 and County Road VV behind Kohl’s. However, for legal reasons, the board wasn't allowed to answer them during the meeting. In an official statement released by the village, Sussex officials answer some of the questions that came to light during the meeting. Why is the Village considering a new corporate center? Another corporate center will add to the property tax base, will add jobs…

Two stone welcome signs costing nearly $50,000 are tentatively approved for Sussex's village limits. Tell us what you think of the stone design in the comments.
The Sussex Village Board has tentatively approved the design and construction of two new welcome signs totaling close to $50,000, according to the Sussex Sun. The signs became a topic of discussion between the board members in December after Quad/Graphics donated $36,000 to the cause. However, after obtaining cost estimates from local companies like Halquist Stone, village officials quickly realized they would need to find additional funding. Approved mock-ups of the signs by Badger Lighting & Signs show them to be 12 feet wide and 7 feet tall. Each side of the three-inch thick stone slab will have additional stone columns to resemble the sign at Sussex Village Park. They will also have a removable plaque recognizing Quad/Graphics' …

A family owned business in the heart of downtown is telling Sussex residents to "Tell Village No to Roundabouts," and with their property on the line, the owners are getting nervous.
The new message to Sussex residents: “Tell Village No to Roundabouts.” It’s plastered on a huge sign in the heart of downtown Sussex. With the first official meeting among Village Board members to discuss the Main Street construction project scheduled for Tuesday, Toots and P.J. Cain are doing everything they can to get residents to show up and oppose roundabouts. The Cains are the owners of Paul’s Service, a second-generation, family owned auto body shop on the corner of Main Street and Maple Avenue. If the village chooses to construct a roundabout on that corner, Paul’s Service could be in line for some real changes. “We’ll be affected big time because they’re talking about taking in the edge of the road between 8 and 15 feet to …

The Town of Lisbon scheduled a public forum in April to get a taste of how residents feel about merging with the Village of Sussex, possibly becoming the City of Sussex-Lisbon. Vote in our Patch Poll on whether or not you like the idea of a merger.
After decades of struggles between governing boards, the Town of Lisbon has scheduled a public forum to address a possible merger with the Village of Sussex to become the City of Sussex-Lisbon. The public forum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 4 at the Richmond Fire Station (N54W26455 Lisbon Road), and attendees can weigh in on whether or not the Lisbon Town Board should consider a merger. However, the board is willing to consider four options: This is how Lisbon currently operates, but many residents and the board feel it isn't sustainable. Some surrounding communities have expressed an interest in annexing some land in Lisbon, and if they did, it would result in a decreased tax base. That would mean the town would need to raise taxes …
