After two months of flexing their volunteers' political muscles on the streets, Wisconsin Democrats delivered a powerful first punch in the recall rumble against Gov. Scott Walker today when they filed more than 1 million signatures to recall the first-term Republican governor. Organizers sets new target of collecting 720,000 signatures to force recall election for Wisconsin governor.

Just one day short of two weeks since the effort began, the group behind the move to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker said Monday it has gathered more than 300,000 signatures — more than half the number needed to force a recall election. Wisconsinites were signing the recall petition at the rate of 1,040 per hour, according to Wisconsin United, the main group behind the effort. In the first 96 hours of the recall effort, which began Nov. 15, more than 105,000 signatures were collected from all 72 counties in Wisconsin. United Wisconsin says Monday's attack was "coordinated and deliberate."
Updated at 8:35 p.m. Monday to indicate that site is back online. Just hours before the official start of the drive to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker from office, the group spearheading the effort said that its website was the victim of a cyberattack on Monday. United Wisconsin, the group working with the Wisconsin Democratic Party in the effort to recall Walker, said Monday evening that its website went down at about 2 p.m. The site was back online about six hours later. The lead organizer of a group dedicated to forcing Wisconsin's governor into a recall election says he is confident they will reach their goal.
Michael Brown, head of United Wisconsin, the group set on recalling Gov. Scott Walker said Sunday that he's confident they will gather the more than 540,000 signatures needed to force the governor into an early election. Brown told the TV news show UpFront with Mike Gousha that United Wisconsin will create 17 offices around the state to collect signatures. Recall efforts will officially begin on Nov. 15. Organizers have until Jan. 13 to collect the signatures. Even if successful, efforts to unseat Walker will face a mountain of cash. The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Monday on an exception in state campaign finance laws for recall elections. The state Senate recall elections that captured the attention of the state and country earlier this year might have just been preludes to the main event. On Tuesday, United Wisconsin announced it would begin collecting signatures Nov. 15 to force a recall election of Gov. Scott Walker. The group, which is collaborating with grassroots organizations throughout the state, is confident it will reach its goal of 700,000 signatures — roughly 160,000 more than the 540,206 needed to force a recall election.
