Sussex is on the hunt for a new recreation director after Amy Flaherty announces she is moving to Key West.
Although the move from Sussex to Key West may seem daunting, Sussex Parks & Recreation Director Amy Flaherty says, “We decided to just go for it.” Flaherty spent more than two years planning and coordinating events and activities in Sussex, and most notably, helped to organize the possible reconstruction of Sussex Village Park. Take an up-close look at what Sussex's Village Park could look like if the village's plans for major renovations at the park win Village Board approval.
The Sussex Parks and Recreatio Department has released its most detailed renderings of the Village Park, visually outlining in 3-D what each section of the park is slated to transform into over the upcoming years. And you don't even need 3-D glasses to see them. From the splash-pad to the enormous baseball quad-plex, the digital drawings of the park were ordered so Sussex could get a more specific total price tag. The original engineering firm, R.A. Smith National, estimated in September that the total park renovation would cost roughly $11 million based on initial drawings. Sussex is spending more than $8,000 to completely resurface the tennis courts at Melinda Weaver Park. The project is expected to be completed this week.
Sussex tennis players rejoice, as the Melinda Weaver Park tennis courts are getting a complete makeover. Construction crews from Poblocki Paving Corp. began stripping and resurfacing the two courts on Tuesday, a process that will cost the village nearly $8,400. Members on the Parks and Recreation Board approved the repaving project back in April. "We had noticed last year that the courts were really starting to show wear and tear," said Parks and Recreation Director Amy Flaherty. "There were large cracks and the surface was falling apart. We had three quotes for the project come in, and Poblocki's was much lower than what we initally budgeted for, so we were thrilled."
