Sussex Parks & Rec to Start a Fundraising, Event Planning Group

Similar to the Friends of the Pauline Hass Library, the Sussex Recreation Department is hoping to start a Friends group. Are you interested?

The Sussex Recreation Department would like to spark a new interest within the community by creating a Friends of Sussex Parks and Recreation group. The Friends Group will begin operating for charitable, educational and benevolent purposes. Some of the goals of this organization may include fundraising for the Village Park Master Plan project, organizing and running a farmers market, enhancing the park system, adding to the community special events offered and supporting recreational programs. The department is looking for adult volunteers within the Sussex community who would be willing to take on projects as a group that the Sussex Recreation Department cannot do without additional support. “The Sussex Recreation Department is growing …

Madeline Park Renovation: "It's a Lot of Money"

Parks and Recreation board members are split. Is it worth spending close to $100,000 on a park that might rarely get used?

Nestled on the corner of Waukesha Avenue and Elm Drive, Madeline Park has been the subject of confusion for Sussex Parks and Recreation board members for more than six months now. And with the final results from the department’s survey tallied, board members are still unclear as to what should occupy the empty lot. The idea to install adult workout stations is officially dead, and although the survey indicates residents would like another playground, board members are unconvinced. After sending the survey to more than 1,000 residents, and after Patch posted the survey for readers, 246 people responded to help give some direction. More than 50 percent of respondents said they’ve never even been to Madeline Park, but even so, a new …

After almost 20 years in Sussex, I have never visited this "park". The location is not useful for most families and I have never seen anyone using the space. Why not sell the land and add a few jobs to the community? There is another business to the north so it would blend in. We have lots of parks that we enjoy, maybe we don't need this one.   more ›

Village Survey: What Should We Build at Madeline Park?

The Village of Sussex is looking for input from residents in its new survey regarding Madeline Park. What should they build there? What would make you visit? Take the survey and actively shape your community.

The Village of Sussex is hard at work again attempting to figure a way to make Madeline Park unique, this time turning toward Sussex residents to shed some light on the space. The Parks and Recreation Department recently created a survey to gather more insight on what residents would like to see at Madeline Park, in addition to how often they use the parks system in general. The survey consists of just nine questions, and Parks and Rec Director Amy Flaherty says she hopes to get a lot of feedback. “We need your help to determine what types of activities you enjoy in the Sussex parks, and what potential amenities you would like to see added to Madeline Park,” Flaherty wrote when distributing the survey.  The revitalization of the park is …

Help Wanted: Volunteers Sought for Parks Projects

Community members needed to help build improvements at Ridgeview and Spring Green for playground installations.

Sussex officials are still looking for community members to help build improvements at village parks. Amy Jeske, director of recreational services, said she’s reaching out to community groups in order to get volunteers to build the improvements at Ridgeview Park and Spring Green Park. The volunteers need to be put in place by late June in order to perform the community builds by late July or early August. “We’re not just looking for just Sussex organizations,” she said. “We’ll take school groups, other groups, or anyone who wants to help out. We’re glad to have them help, too.” Parks officials are searching for volunteers to build improvements to community parks in order to save money on construction costs. The idea was first floated at …
