Between President Obama saying he supports gay marriage and North Carolina recently voting to ban gay marriage, Patch wants to see how Sussex residents feel about the controversial issue.
Unless you've been living under a rock, it's quite clear that one of the most debated topics in politics lately has been gay rights, and last night, the President joined the movement. In a sit-down interview with ABC News Thursday, President Barack Obama finally came out in favor of gay marriage, a topic he claimed to be "evolving" on throughout his presidency. While he said he's always believed in equal rights for gay couples, he wasn't convinced the union should be called marriage -- until now. "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are …

A six-month deadline for the state to act on the Town of Brookfield's incorporation request would be waived while the town and neighboring municipalities participate in mediation with a retired judge.
A state agency ruling on whether the Town of Brookfield can seek voter approval to become a village would be delayed to give the town time to enter mediation talks with the cities of Brookfield and Waukesha and Village of Sussex. Unlike Sussex's current talks with the Town of Lisbon to facilitate a merger, village officials oppose the Town of Brookfield's attempt to become a village. Doing so would protect the town from annexation by neighboring communities like Sussex. The four municipalities have signed and filed a stipulation, asking Waukesha County Circuit Judge Donald Hassin Jr. to lift a required 180-day deadline for the state to rule on the incorporation case. Also signing was Jay Walt, a Town of Brookfield resident who originally …

The Sussex woman stole more than $350 in groceries from the Brookfield Metro Market, telling police she tried to take the food because she was having money problems.
A Sussex woman is facing charges that allege she tried to steal more than $300 in groceries from a Brookfield supermarket. Ashley N. Hoffmann, 23, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Monday with one count of retail theft. If convicted, she faces up to nine months in prison and $10,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint: At 10:20 a.m. Saturday, employees at Metro Market spotted Hoffmann trying to conceal merchandise and take and steal it from the store. While she was loading the items into her van in the parking lot, she was approached and asked to show a receipt, but Hoffmann said she didn’t have time and took off. She was stopped a short time later by a Wisconsin State Trooper on Capitol Drive. Hoffmann had $355 worth …

The first draft of the 2012-13 budget was presented to the School Board, and with the slow decline in state aid, Hamilton is expecting to recoup the revenue with increased taxes.
The Hamilton School Board took its first look at the 2012-13 budget Monday, and due to the continuing drop in state aid, taxes are expected to increase for district residents. The total proposed budget is $49.1 million — an increase of more than 1.5 percent compared to this year’s budget. However, the district is quick to point out the proposed budget is still more than 2 percent less than two years ago. And while the district is looking at a no-change, “status quo budget,” Businesses Services Assistant Superintendent Bryan Ruud said property tax increases are coming because of decline in state aid. “We’re continuing to see a trend, a shift of our revenue from the state to the local taxpayer,” Ruud said. “There are less dollars coming …

Whether its a neighbor that fed your dog while you were out on Spring Break, or a friend that gives their time to help out at a soup kitchen on the weekend, share their stories in the comments section and spread the good news!
People in Sussex are doing meaningful things every day, and we think it's time the rest of the community hears about these good deeds. Whether they are volunteering their time with a local organization or quietly helping out a friend or neighbor, we would like you to recognize a local do-gooder in the comments section of this article. Patch already recognizes people that make a difference in the community, so we may want to interview and write about the person that you mention for our "Greatest Person" feature with their permission. Even if we don't write a news story, you can give that person their five minutes of fame by telling their story here for other community members to read. So, go ahead, tell us who deserves a little recognition…

National Weather Service is calling for severe thunderstorms — and possibly hail and tornadoes — throughout southeastern Wisconsin, including Sussex.
A double whammy of severe weather is expected to hit southeastern Wisconsin this weekend as the National Weather Service is calling for two separate storms to hit the region on Saturday and Sunday The service is predicting severe thunderstorm both days, and says there is a possibility for hail or even tornadoes. Some thunderstorms are expected Friday night as warm and humid air moves into the region, but those storms won't be severe, the service says. However, another strong push of warm and humid air will return to southern Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon and night. That storm could bring hail and damaging wind gusts, the service says. It adds that an isolated tornado "can not be ruled out." But the worst of it will come Sunday afternoon …

Same-sex marriage is legal??? No, that's called a ceremony, not marriage. Right now there are thousands and thousands of same-sex couples who have been together just as long as any others (probably longer), thank you Rush (3rd marriage) and Britney (24 hour marriage). Yet these loving consenting couples cannot get the same certificate (right) at the court house that is currently afforded to …   more ›
