Who Should Keep Pauline Haass Land? Library Board or Lisbon?

The Town of Lisbon and the Pauline Haass Library Board have been fighting over who should keep the land where Pauline Haass lived on for nearly 35 year.

The Town of Lisbon and the Pauline Haass Library Board have been fighting over who should keep the land where Pauline Haass use to live. Pauline Haass left the land in a will to Lisbon. However, the board argues that state law gives them control of the land because library boards have "exclusive charge, control and custody" over lands bequeathed to them, reported the Sussex Sun. Her will states that her estate would be used for the formation of a commission that would oversee the construction and operation of a new library for the town. This is what she had to say in her will: "In order that said library may be centrally located in the said township of Lisbon, I authorize and empower the governing body of same Town of Lisbon, at its …

Lisbon and Pauline Haass Library Fighting Over Farm

The two government agencies are fighting over the 65-acre farm where Haass lived for 34 years.

The Town of Lisbon and the Pauline Haass Library Board are fighting over the 65-acre farm at Lake Five and Hickory roads where Pauline Haass use to live for 34 years, reported the Sussex Sun. Before her death Pauline Haass wrote in her will that her estate would be left to the Town of Lisbon with the purpose of building a free library. The library board argues that state law gives them control of the land.  There has also been an ongoing controversy over whether the Town of Lisbon would continue to fund the Pauline Haass Library because Sussex and Lisbon can't agree on funding. Below is a list of happenings compiled by the library:      New Catalog The library will be starting its new catalog on Wednesday, November 28.  This new system will have a new look, easy log-in procedures, easier searching, text notifications and the ability to retain a reading history.  We appreciate your patience during the change to our new system.   Holiday Piano Sunday The library is looking for pianists of all ages who feel accomplished enough to confidently entertain library users with holiday music on Sunday, December 16, 2:00-3:45 p.m.  Performers should be prepared to present either a fifteen minute or a thirty minute …

Below is a list of happenings compiled by the library:   Friends of PHPL Holiday Book & Bake Sale The Friends of the Pauline Haass Library will be holding their annual Holiday Book and Bake Sale, offering gifts for books lovers.  Dates of the sale are Saturday, November 17 from 9:30-2:00, Sunday, November 18 from 1:00-4:00, and Monday, November 19 from 3:00-7:00.  Choose from a great selection of beautiful like-new used books and book related items.  The Friends of the Library are offering these items to the public to help fund programs and activities not covered in the library budget.   A free gift will be given to those who wish …

Friends Hold Annual Holiday Book and Bake Sale

Friends of the Pauline Haass Library gear up for the event this weekend to raise funds for the community library.

With their love of books and their passion for reading, Friends of the Pauline Haass Library present the annual Holiday Book and Bake Sale Nov. 19 through the 21. The event will feature barely-used books, book related items and home baked goods donated by volunteers. All the proceeds will go to the Friends and in return will be used to fund special needs for the library. Bev Schulz, member of the Friends of the Pauline Haas Public Library and chairperson for the Holiday Book and Bake Sale committee, explains the event supports the importance of a library in a community. “We hold the event just because our love for books and our love of the library,” Schulz said. Library Seeks Slight Increase in Overall Budget

Despite increases in some costs, overall operational budget remains flat in 2012.

The Pauline Haass Public Library is asking for $1 million to fund its operational budget, capital plan and debt service in 2012, which is an $11,815 increase from this year. Kathy Klager, director of the library, said the overall operational budget will not go up next year, but the additional money will be used to pay for debt service payments totaling $207,965, which is a $4,000 increase from 2011. Capital projects are budgeted at $54,000, which is a $4,000 increase from this year. The total operational costs are projected to rise by $9,820, but the costs will be offset by more than $12,000 in reduced costs brought on by pension contribution changes dictated from the state level. “Our continuing education budget will also return to its …

Pauline Haass Public Library's Piano Sundays program open to all ages.

Do you feel confident enough about your ability to tickle the ivories that you'd like to perform in public? Then the Pauline Haass Public Library is looking for you. The library will once again offer its popular Piano Sundays program this fall. The program gives local pianists of all ages the opportunity to perform on the library piano from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month in October, November and December. Piano studios will have the opportunity to showcase their students on the third Sunday of the month from September through December. Sussex to Mark National Night Out with Ice Cream Social

Residents are welcomed to come out and support the library while building community spirit on Wednesday night.

Sussex residents are welcome to come out to the village’s National Night Out celebration being held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Weyer Park, N64W23760 Main St. The event, which is being held in conjunction with the Friends of the Pauline Haass Public Library’s ice cream social, will provide residents an opportunity to come out and see police and fire equipment in action. Children will also be able to get fitted for bicycle helmets. “There will be a fire truck, bicycle helmets, police dogs and the whole nine yards for the family to come out and enjoy and find ways to be safer,” Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said. “And they can also enjoy some ice cream and support the library.” National Night Out events will take place across the …
