Meissner Farm May Not Become Commercial Space After All

The Meissner family bought back the property they sold off in 2002 back from Johnson Bank who was originally going to sell it to developers.

Meissner Farm was slated for commercial development but may remain a farm after the Meissner family bought back the 400-acre farm, reported The Sussex Sun. Hickory Hills Farm Inc. purchased 370 acres of land from Johnson Bank, which took over the property from Bielinski Brothers who had originally purchased it for residential development from the Meissner family in 2002. NAI/MLG Development company was in discussions with the Village of Sussex about a multimillion dollar commercial park on 120 acres of the land. The developers were seeking a tax increment financing (TIF) district for the financing from the village.  Developers later learned the project was going to cost more than they thought and scrapped it. A new plan was going to be …

Business Park On Meissner Farm To Be Proposed Again

Michael Mooney, the chairman of NAI/MLG Commercial would not elaborate on the commercial park that would sit on the Meissner Farm land.

A business park at Highway 164 and Silver Spring Road will be proposed to the village within the next couple of months, the Sussex Sun is reporting. Michael Mooney, the chairman of NAI/MLG Commercial told the paper that he would not elaborate on the commercial park that would sit on the Meissner Farm land. MLG proposed a plan earlier in 2012 that entailed the village to "purchase the 120 acres for about $2.3 million and then spend another $4.1 million building the streets, utilities and other public improvements needed for the park that would be developed by NAI/MLG," the paper said. "The plan called for the village to use revenues from a tax increment financing district to pay for the improvements," the paper added. The plan was abandoned…

Sussex Business Park Officially Over, Village President Weighs In

After cancelling the public hearing, the village board officially voted to end discussion on the business park behind Shopko and Kohl’s.

The plan to begin development on a new business park in Sussex is officially dead after Village Board members voted to end the project during Tuesday night’s board meeting. This comes after Village Administrator Jeremy Smith announced the cancellation of Wednesday’s public hearing pertaining the project, as well as his professional recommendation to kill the development plan. The swift end to the potential corporate park comes after preliminary costs came in more than $1 million more than anticipated. Sussex Village President Greg Goetz spoke about the project during the meeting, explaining that while TIF districts run by the village have meant hundreds of millions of dollars in tax base, jobs and economic diversity, this project fell …

Sussex Business Park Likely Dead; Public Hearing Canceled

After cost estimates for multimillion-dollar park came in higher than expected, Sussex has canceled the July 25 public hearing and is expecting to end the project.

It appears that plans for a controversial new business park in Sussex are dead after preliminary costs for the project came in more than $1 million more than anticipated. Village Administrator Jeremy Smith says the Sussex Village Board will meet on July 24 to discuss the corporate park, proposed near Highway 164 and Silver Spring Drive, but he says the staff is recommending killing the project. A public hearing that had been scheduled for July 25 has been canceled. “The Village Board is going to be taking action on the project on the 24th, and my guess is the deal is probably done at this point,” Smith said. “Some of the engineering numbers are coming in much higher than anticipated, and while they might be worked out, it won’t be any time…

Again bill, why do you live by a farm if you hate the smell?? Seems stupid. And why would it be a smart idea to put up a business park when the economy is in the tank and jobs aren't growing? We have enough empty buildings in Sussex as it is.   more ›

Meissner to Downsize Farm If Business Park is Approved

With Sussex’s latest business park on the fast track, Pete Meissner says he’ll pull his 600 head of cattle from Sussex if the deal is approved.

It has been a heated battle between the Village of Sussex and Sussex farmer Pete Meissner over plans to construct a new business park, but the situation has just reached new heights. The 120 acres of farmland being evaluated for the new corporate center, near the corner of highways 164 and VV, was formerly owned by the Meissner family, but was sold in 2002. The family farm has continued to use the land after its sale, and Meissner says its essential to his cattle business in Sussex. “If Sussex buys that ground and we’re left with 120 less acres, I don’t believe we’ll be able to maintain our farming enterprises here,” said Meissner, whose family has been farming on the site for nearly 80 years. “Once that happens, there’s no turning back. …
