Are you for or against the proposed 200,000-square-foot store to be located at Highways K and 164.
A lot has been made of the proposed Meijer store that is being proposed in the Village of Sussex. The store to be located at Highways K and 164, will be about 200,000-square-foot complex that will consist of grocery, retail and pharmacy. The store plans to hire 200 to 250 employees and will also include a gas station on the premise. It is expected to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Click here to read all about the project. Supporters have said that the big box store would be an welcomed addition to the local economy, spurring growth, traffic to other retailers and jobs. Sussex Village President Greg Goetz described the two public hearings held Wednesday regarding the proposed Meijer store as productive with valuable input gained from both supporters and those that are opposed to the project. About 100 residents attended and about two dozen spoke during the two public hearings for a condition-use permit and changes to the village's land-use map to allow for the store to be built. "We answered a lot of the questions that they had," said Goetz. "I think some of the people were satisfied. They even stated that they were not totaling against the project, but they had a lot of questions…I think some of those were addressed." Area residents voice their opposition, support for the proposed big box.
The Sussex Village Board on Tuesday unanimously approved an ordinance to change village conditional use code allowing for larger big boxes in certain areas zoned for business, a measure driven by the proposed Meijer store. Retail stores in the village's B2 zone can now be 250,000 square feet rather than 125,000 square feet as previously allowed by law. The proposed Meijer store is expected to be nearly 200,000 square feet. Trustees noted that the amended code would apply to all big box stores in the village's B2 zoned area, not just the Meijer store. Unfortunately Sussex does not have the demographics to support boutiques such as you suggest. It takes a lot of money to keep a business running and the "little guy" family operator generally does not have the cash flow to support a store in a town with a population like Sussex.   more ›
