Sussex Leos Club Raises Money, Donates to Visually Impaired

The group of teenage volunteers presented an oversized check to the Vision Forward Association in Milwaukee.

Due to Lions Daze, everyone knows about the Sussex Lions Club and the amazing work they do for the community. However, the Sussex Leo Club is no stranger to community involvement either.  Almost like a junior-Lions Club, the Leos are a group of more than 70 area students between the ages of 12 and 18. Each dollar they raise goes back into the community with their most recent donation of $350 going to the Vision Forward Association.  As a Milwaukee-based organization serving all of southeastern Wisconsin, Vision Forward offers services to blind or visually impaired people of all ages. Vanessa Nerbun, the organization's resource development manager, says there's an estimated 60,000 people living with vision loss or blindness in Southeastern …

New Director, Same Important Service at Sussex-Area Outreach Services

Food pantry and assistance center welcomes its new executive director, and she’s planning on making sure its tremendous service lives on.

It’s more than just a food pantry. Sussex-Area Outreach Services (SOS) provides clothing, toys, programs and all around assistance to anyone who needs it, and the important resource is welcoming its brand new executive director. Jennifer Waltz has been living in Sussex for four years as a social worker before taking the reigns at SOS on Oct. 17. However, even with her years of experience, this job isn’t going to be a cakewalk. The outreach center serves more than 500 households in the surrounding communities, almost 400 percent more than just five years ago. Waltz still remains positive, and she’s quickly learning the how generous Sussex truly is. “It’s going really well so far,” Waltz said. “I find we have this amazing pool of volunteers …

Chili Cook-Off Benefits the Food Pantry

The Sussex Lions Club will be having a chili cook-off to raise money and food donations for Sussex-area Outreach Services.

Sussex residents, prepare your taste buds. The Sussex Lions Club is holding it's 28th annual chili cook-off on Monday at 6:00 p.m. at the Sussex Armory to raise money and awareness for the food pantry. With the pantry's shelves at the Sussex-area Outreach Services extremely empty, there's no better time to have a community fundraiser. Although it's not unusual for the pantry to see a lull in donations this time of year, items are still flying off the shelves making this a very important fundraiser. This is a public, important and fun event, with tickets costing $6 in advance or $7 at the door with a non-perishable food item. But if you think you have what it takes to compete in the cook-off, call Carol Braeger at (262) 246-3032. You could …
