Life Coaches Offer Tips on Making Resolutions Stick

Here's how not to have a "complete and epic fail."

For an example of a “complete and epic fail” in keeping a New Year’s Resolution, Patch thanks Port Washington-Saukville reader Jason Godersky, who told us on Facebook that his 2011 promise to avoid fast food lasted until Jan. 5. “Darn McChickens and Dollar Menu,” he wrote. Undoubtedly, similar stories abound. How to do better in 2012? We asked those who make a living offering such support, “life coaches” in and near various Southeastern Wisconsin Patch Communities. Jamie Durner of BodyMind Coaching in Brookfield recommends spinning your resolution toward the positive — for example, don’t commit to losing weight, commit to running a 5K race. “If you focus on the negative, you want it more and more and more,” Durner said. In addition, she …

Sussex Week Ahead: Christmas and New Years

This is a list of things to do and places to be this week in Sussex.

Merry Christmas from Sussex Patch! If you're reading this, I'm assuming you're only doing so because you need to test out your fabulous new laptop or iPad that Santa delivered last night. Now it's time to grab another cup of coffee, curl up in a blanket and surf Sussex Patch the rest of the holiday. Need something fun to do with the kids between Christmas and New Year's Eve? Look no further than the Sussex Parks and Recreation Department. The department will be holding Clay Creatures where students will be guided through a step-by-step process from inception to the finished piece as they learn to sculpt and paint animals using clay. The event is on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 - 11 a.m. at the Community Center. There is a fee for this …

Area pastors talk about the spiritual significance of the holiday.

Patch asked clergy members at area churches to share with our readers some of their thoughts about the meaning of Christmas and the significance of this day.As you share this day with your friends and family, please take a few minutes to read what local pastors have to say about the true meaning of Christmas. ______________________________ Pastor Rob Goodwin Grace Lutheran Church, Menomonee Falls Christmas is a time of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us. You see, Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great …

Your Best Holiday Traditions Are Measured in Calories

It's family and food and gifts and food and stockings and food and ....

Christmas is about … love? faith? giving? All of those, perhaps, but when we asked Patch readers for their holiday traditions, the unmistakable theme was … food. Take a minute to read some of the traditions we've received from our readers and share your family's holiday traditions in the comments section below. “In days past (before adopting a more healthy eating lifestyle) my mom would bake her brains out for about two weeks before Christmas,” wrote Nancy Ball Carmody on our Port Washington-Saukville Patch Facebook page. “We would have at LEAST 8 different varieties of cookies. My favorites were her coffee cherry bells … the cut-out, press into a mold, bake, and then elaborately decorate Santas, stars, trees, angels and stockings. … I …

Chat LIVE with Santa Claus on Patch This Thursday

Children and adults both welcome for this special holiday event.

We're a little more than 24 hours away from our historic LIVE online chat with Santa Claus at 5 p.m. Thursday. Ask him the questions you’ve always wondered — even as an adult — or allow your children to file some urgent last-minute requests. Some of the questions will be answered via video, so there will be no mistaking that Kris Kringle himself is involved. There’s no fee or registration required to participate. Visit the page to enter your email address and receive a reminder to be part of this special, one-hour Patch holiday event. And if you can't be there in person, email your question to milwaukee@patch.com and we'll try to have it answered.

Poll: How Far Will You Travel This Holiday?

Maps, road conditions, weather forecast and more are available here.

Will you be among the estimated 1.8 million “Sconnies” who plan to travel during the extended holiday season? Here’s what you need to know. AAA Wisconsin reports the average gas price will be $3.23 per gallon, about 90 cents cheaper than the summer. Research local gas prices by clicking the "Traffic & Gas" link in the navigation bar at the top of the page. Winter isn’t expected to bare its teeth for at least the first leg of vacation, making driving reasonable. According to the early forecast from the National Weather Service, Christmas weekend will be sunny with highs hovering around freezing. Don’t forget that on Christmas Day, there’s the not-small matter of a Bears-Packers game at Lambeau Field. That will add to the traffic on highways…

When Faux Jewelry is Really Faux: The Worst Christmas Gifts Ever

We asked for the biggest flops from beneath the tree, and Patch readers delivered.

We laughed, we winced, we instinctively began to search for a gift receipt. Patch asked you to share the stories of your Worst Christmas Gift Ever on our Facebook pages, and you obliged with some real winners (losers, that is). And if you've got some holiday gift horror stories, it's not too late to share them with us. Just post a comment at the bottom of this story and let us hear your tale of the ugly tie, the sweater you can't bear to take out the closet, or other Christmas gift gaffes. Kristen Kvool Martin, Port Washington: “When I was a kid, probably about 11 or 12, my older brother pulled a pair of my dirty underwear out of my clothes hamper, wrapped it up and gave it to me as a Christmas gift. I eagerly unwrapped it at our family …

How To Give Back This Holiday Season

“If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.” – Booker T. Washington

With the arrival of the holiday season comes the spirit of volunteering and love. To jump-start your spirit, Patch has compiled a list of opportunities to spread the Christmas cheer locally through time, compassion and a helping hand. Volunteering is a gift given in many ways. Joy Tree Sussex Village Hall, N64 W23760 Main St. The annual Joy Tree, sponsored by the Sussex Community Center, is a tree decorated with gift idea tags in the center’s lobby. People can come and choose a tag or tags, return the wrapped gift and on Thursday the presents will be handed out to older adults who are in need of a gift. Presents may be returned to the Village Hall or Community Center. Wauwatosa Community Christmas Dinner Help those in need of a warm …

Holiday Gifts for Families in Need

Giving trees will be set up throughout Sussex to collect gifts for needy families.

Sussex-Area Outreach Services (SOS) is thinking of those less fortunate this holiday season by setting up "joy trees" in the village in hopes of collecting gifts. Both the Sussex Community Center and Village Hall will have Christmas trees set up on Wednesday with gift ideas hanging off the branches like ornaments. Residents are encouraged to choose as many items as they wish and return the unwrapped gifts to the Community Center or Village Hall by Dec. 15. Residents can also bring the gifts straight to the SOS office or St. James Church where they'll be distributed to children under the age of 17 on on Dec. 17. Below is a list of gift ideas SOS is recommending. However, they are just ideas, so feel free to come up with your own to make …
