Drive will be held Saturday, Sept. 15 at local Piggly Wiggly and Pick 'n Save stores.
Members of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Sussex will be collecting food on Saturday, Sept. 15 in response to the food shortage at the Sussex Food Pantry. The “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” food drive will be held at Sussex Piggly Wiggly and Pick 'n Save stores from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members of the church will hand flyers to incoming shoppers containing items in greatest need at the Sussex Food Pantry, collect food and deliver collected items to the Sussex Food Pantry that day. Community members can get involved by contributing food for the Sussex Food Pantry at one of the grocery store. Stamp Out Hunger Day is Saturday, May 12. The Sussex post office will pick up your nonperishable items right from your mailbox... you just have to fill the bag. Sussex Outreach Services is volunteering to sort all the goods.
The facts are a bit sobering: (sources: USDA Food Security Report 2010, Feeding America Annual Report 2011) However, the need doesn't go unheard, and the National Letter Carriers Association is again presenting "Stamp Out Hunger Day," Saturday, May 12. Locally, Sussex postal carriers have provided donation bags earlier this week in your mailboxes, but really any small donation in a bag will do. Volunteers from Sussex Outreach Services will be at the post office sorting through all the donations. The Sussex postal carriers are joining with the nation’s 210,000 letter carriers to collect food donations left at the mailbox in more than 10,000 communities and deliver them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations. The holidays will be a bit brighter for area families in need of food and gifts.
Sussex-Area Outreach Services has joined forces with Saint James Church for the 20th year to distribute Christmas joy to area families in need. Between a hefty holiday meal, children’s clothes and toys for kids of any age, Jennifer Waltz, the Director of SOS, is thankful for the community's gracious aid during the Christmas season. “These are all donated new toys and clothes, and so far, this is just a small portion donations,” Waltz said. “Kids from Willow Springs just came over with bags of toys, and people are continuing to bring more stuff from our office.” Between anonymous donations, gifts from three Joy Trees in Sussex and donations from area churches, food and gifts are literally piled in the basement of St. James Church waiting to…

To celebrate Constitution Day and being a good citizen, fourth graders at Marcy Elementary collected food for the pantry.
Fourth graders at Marcy Elementary School got creative this Constitution Day and collected food for the Sussex Food Pantry. The students have been learning about the United States government and the rights and responsibilities that come with being a citizen. That's why the students showed their good citizenship by helping those in need. The 87 fourth graders collected nine boxes and seven bags of groceries for the pantry, and the food was delievered on Saturday, the 224th anniversary of the signing of the US Constitution.
