The Leos Club pulls together a donation to the Deputy Sheriff's Association Make-A-Wish fundraiser for a local child with a bone marrow disease.
Every year the Waukesha Deputy Sheriff’s Association hosts a fundraiser to make a child's dream come true, and this year, the Sussex Leos are helping. Sussex Leo President Amanda Phillips, along with other Leos, presented a $600 donation during Lions Daze to Officer Mark Nihoris and other members of the Waukesha Deputy Sheriff's Association for their Make-A-Wish event for a local child in need. Bryce, the 4-year-old son of a Waukesha County deputy, has a bone marrow disease called Severe Aplastic Anemia. The Deputy Sheriff’s Association is hosting an event where half of the proceeds go to Bryce, and the half is donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Wisconsin. On September 8, the group will host the third annual Waukesha Deputy Sheriff’s…

The group of teenage volunteers presented an oversized check to the Vision Forward Association in Milwaukee.
Due to Lions Daze, everyone knows about the Sussex Lions Club and the amazing work they do for the community. However, the Sussex Leo Club is no stranger to community involvement either. Almost like a junior-Lions Club, the Leos are a group of more than 70 area students between the ages of 12 and 18. Each dollar they raise goes back into the community with their most recent donation of $350 going to the Vision Forward Association. As a Milwaukee-based organization serving all of southeastern Wisconsin, Vision Forward offers services to blind or visually impaired people of all ages. Vanessa Nerbun, the organization's resource development manager, says there's an estimated 60,000 people living with vision loss or blindness in Southeastern …

Donation from Emmanuel Community United Methodist Church pushes food pantry closer to its goal of raising $200,000.
The Menomonee Falls Area Food Pantry on Tuesday received a $10,000 donation from Emmanuel Community United Methodist Church. The church’s donation pushes the total funds raised for the pantry’s new facility to $120,000. Organizers have a goal of raising $200,000 to cover construction costs, as well as increased utilities costs associated with the their new building. The church’s $10,374.97 donation (to be exact) is a big step toward their goal, but $80,000 remain — and organizers are in dire need to reach their fund-raising goal. “Our deadline to raise the $200,000 was yesterday,” Board Member Julie Loth figuratively stated. Food Pantry President Robin Manke said their food supply budget is also very tight right now. She said the pantry is…

Area businesses offer many options for disposing of electronics and medications
Proper recycling or disposal of your hazardous waste items such as computers, electronics, batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and medications protects our environment for generations to come. And, for many items, it’s also a law. Computers and electronics As of Sept. 1, 2010, Wisconsin's electronics recycling law, 2009 Wisconsin Act 50, bans the landfilling and incineration of electronic devices. Many of these items contain toxic substances such as lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, additional heavy metals and chemical flame retardants, which can seep into our environment if dumped into landfills.
