'City of Sussex-Lisbon' to be Discussed Tuesday Night

This will be the third public forum Lisbon officials are holding to answer any questions and take comments from citizens regarding the Sussex-Lisbon merger.

Sussex and Lisbon-area residents are invited to the Hamilton Fine Arts Center on Town Line Road in Sussex on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. for another public forum regarding the potential merger between the two municipalities. This will be the third opportunity for citizens to talk with Town of Lisbon officials about the consolidation efforts by asking questions or giving comments. It's estimated that 300 people attended the last public forum, and the overwhelming majority of them opposed the merger. In addition, some town officials are already predicting this effort to merge will fail. Town Chairman Matt Gehrke said that there would have to be an overwhelming backing from voters for the Town Board to continue backing the idea. "There is going to …

Sussex-Lisbon Merger Predicted to Fail by Town Official

The Lisbon Town Supervisor says he thinks voters will shut down the consolidation idea during next month's referendum.

Lisbon Town Supervisor Dan Heier says he thinks voters will strike down the idea to combine the Village of Sussex and Lisbon during the August 14 referendum, according to the Sussex Sun. The group of officials discussed the merger during Monday night’s Town Board Meeting in Lisbon, and even Town Chairman Matt Gehrke agreed that there would have to be an overwhelming backing from voters for the Town Board to continue backing the idea. "There is going to have to be a strong indication of support for the board to proceed, Ryan and I might have a slight difference in how you define strong," said Gehrke. Ryan Lippert, a town supervisor, mentioned he wouldn’t support the consolidation with Sussex even if Lisbon residents support it by a small …

The development deal died a few days ago and officially died last night. No one in Sussex wanted that either. I think there's going to be a big change during the next election...   more ›

Lisbon Waits to Endorse a Sussex Merger, Public Forum Scheduled

The Lisbon Town Board says it wants to wait until after Wednesday night's public forum to endorse the Sussex-Lisbon merger.

The Lisbon Town Board members postponed a vote on whether or not they endorse a potential merger with Sussex, saying they would prefer to vote after Lisbon’s public forum on Wednesday, according to the Sussex Sun. The Hamilton Fine Arts Center will host the public forum at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, open to anyone interested in learning more about the potential merger. During Monday night’s meeting in Lisbon, Town Chairman Matt Gehrke outlined various reasons why the town should negotiate with Sussex officials about a merger. However, Gehrke said he and the other Lisbon Town Board members would drop the idea of a consolidation if voters struck down the merger during the upcoming August 14 referendum. The entire reasoning behind the potential …

I also think the merger is interesting but I believe the name should just stay as Sussex. We don't need some hyphenated name like someone getting married.   more ›

Lisbon Board Details Sussex-Lisbon Merger, Many Residents Uninterested

Close to 250 people attended the Sussex-Lisbon merger meeting Wednesday night, but based on most comments, Lisbon residents aren’t happy with a consolidation.

Area residents packed the Lisbon Fire Department Wednesday night to learn more about a possible merger between the Village of Sussex and the Town of Lisbon, and some people didn’t like what they were hearing. About 250 people attended the informational meeting where Matt Gehrke, the town’s chairman, spoke about four options available for Lisbon, each with advantages and drawbacks. The town could either: Stay exactly as they are, but be at constant risk of having land annexed by surrounding communities. If that were to happen, Lisbon’s tax base would be reduced, and it can’t afford for that to happen. Continue as a town but provide services like most villages providing a short-term tax benefit. This is not the first choice of any Town Board…

POLL: Should Lisbon Merge with Sussex? Public Forum Scheduled

The Town of Lisbon scheduled a public forum in April to get a taste of how residents feel about merging with the Village of Sussex, possibly becoming the City of Sussex-Lisbon. Vote in our Patch Poll on whether or not you like the idea of a merger.

After decades of struggles between governing boards, the Town of Lisbon has scheduled a public forum to address a possible merger with the Village of Sussex to become the City of Sussex-Lisbon. The public forum is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on April 4 at the Richmond Fire Station (N54W26455 Lisbon Road), and attendees can weigh in on whether or not the Lisbon Town Board should consider a merger. However, the board is willing to consider four options: This is how Lisbon currently operates, but many residents and the board feel it isn't sustainable. Some surrounding communities have expressed an interest in annexing some land in Lisbon, and if they did, it would result in a decreased tax base. That would mean the town would need to raise taxes …

Property values have minimal impact on the tax rate the municipality still needs x dollars to operate, as property values drop your mill rate will increase but your overall tax will remain the same. The village as far as I have seen is not driving up the mill rate my taxes are not greatly increasing due to reduced property values just my resale value is dropping. The only reason the tax rate will…   more ›
