Donors Enjoy Chili Cookoff, Bring Piles of Gifts for Soldiers

It wasn't the smell of money that drew people into North Shore Bank Friday afternoon, but the delightful mid-winter aroma of simmering chili.

The bait last Friday afternoon was the chili cookoff in Sussex. The hook was the hospitality of North Shore Bank employees. The catch was bags and boxes of food treats and personal items - together with a fair amount of cash - all for the Sussex Lioness Club to use in filling care packages for American troops in active war zones. Over the past five years, the Lioness Club has packed and shipped nearly 1,000 overstuffed Priority Mail boxes, each with a handwritten letter, each weighing roughly 10 pounds and each "stuffed to the point that they look more like a football than a box," said Marlene Duehr, who has led the program for the local organization. "We've got this down to a science," she said, "and we know just how to pack these boxes …

Club Hopes Chili Will Spice Up Donations to Troops

3-way restaurant chili cook-off is the draw to bring in food and personal items for shipment to those serving overseas.

Sometimes you need to give a little to get a little. The Sussex Lioness club has organized a Friday afternoon drop-off of food and personal items to be shipped to those in the military serving in war zones. The reward: free chili and refreshments, plus the chance to win prizes. The Lioness' collection for the troops and "chili cook-off" between local restaurants runs from 2-5:30 p.m. Friday at North Shore Bank, W249n6600 Hwy. 164. The chili recipes of three Sussex restaurants will be featured: Culver's, George Webb and Tailgators Sports Bar and Grille. Those who donate are free to sample the chilis and vote on their favorite, said Candy Walecki, branch manager of the bank, a Lioness and coordinator of the event. Walecki was looking for a …
