Village Taxes to Rise Less Than 2% This Year

Increase will cost typical homeowner about $24 more than last year.

Sussex homeowners will experience an 1.7 percent increase in the village portion of their taxes after the Village Board unanimously approved the municipality's 2013 spending plan on Tuesday. The owner of the average home assessed at $280,725 will see an increase of $24, or 1.7 percent, in village taxes from last year. The total property tax levy will increase by $153,052, or 2.87 percent. "We are trying to bridge the economic peaks and valleys," said Village Administrator Jeremy Smith during his budget presentation. One Of Two Village Ambulances On Its Last Legs

Replacing the ambulance, which will cost about $200,000, is part of budget discussions.

Sussex taxpayers may soon pay for a new ambulance as one of the two emergency medical vehicles the fire department operates is on its last legs.  The ambulance is 15 years old, which is the life expectancy for ambulances in the department, according to Sussex Fire Chief Colin Curtis, who estimated the cost of a new ambulance to be about $200,000.  "That is with little or no trade-in value," he said during a phone interview Tuesday morning. "It's literally ran into the ground by that point in time."  Curtis noted that it is not entirely the number of miles that does an ambulance in, but just the large amount of time it sits idling during calls.  "So it's hours on a vehicle that makes a difference too," Curtis said. Taxes Increase Slightly in Proposed 2013 Village Budget

Maintaining roads, parks and service are the priorities for the village's funding plans. Residents can learn more about the proposed budget at two meetings in September.

Village taxes would increase 1.62 percent under Sussex's proposed 2013 budget, which will allow the village to maintain and even improve its level of service. According to a memo from Village Administrator Jeremy Smith, introducing the proposed budget, the owner of the average home ($280,725) will experience a tax increase of $22.24, or 1.62 percent. The village will raise its levy by $149,678, or 2.8 percent, with the budget proposed.  "Sussex continues to provide a great value to its citizens.  In the new levy limit environment it is essential that the Village Board consider how and when to utilize the remaining levy capacity it has available to meet the continued needs of the community," Smith wrote in the memo.   "This budget will …

Sussex Warms Up For Budget Season

A kickoff budget meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 at the public safety building.

With Labor Day a few days away and kids returning to school, Sussex will be turning its collective attention to its favorite season of the year.  No, not the football season. Budget season. Village administrator Jeremy Smith told the Village Board on Tuesday that village staff was proofreading the proposed budget and planned to print it on Wednesday. The Village Board will receive the proposed budget by Friday, he indicated.
