How Mitt Romney Lost Wisconsin After Scott Walker Won

Just five months after Republican Gov. Scott Walker handily won his recall election, GOP nominee Mitt Romney didn't have the same success in the presidential race.

It's a lost prize that stings for Republicans: How could Mitt Romney lose Wisconsin just five months after Gov. Scott Walker won it? While nationally Romney barely surpassed GOP nominee John McCain's popular vote total in 2008 (58.6 million votes for Romney vs 58.3 million for McCain), in Wisconsin, the former Massachusetts governor surged past McCain by about 11 percentage points. Romney had more votes than McCain in the bright red suburban Milwaukee counties. He even gained votes in dark-blue Milwaukee and Dane counties. Meanwhile, President Barack Obama didn't perform as well as he did in Wisconsin in 2008 — his vote total was 4.4 percentage points less Tuesday than it was in 2008. But statewide, neither Romney's gains nor Obama's …

Novack to Replace Nickolaus as Waukesha County Clerk

City of Pewaukee alderwoman Kathleen Novack will replace embattled Waukesha Coutny Clerk Kathy Nickolaus, who decided to not seek re-election.

City of Pewaukee Alderwoman Kathleen Novack will be the new clerk of Waukesha County. Novack, 62, won 71 percent of the vote, or 155,430 votes, in Tuesday's county clerk race, beating Town of Lisbon business owner Jessie Read, 52, who collected 63,575 votes, or 29 percent of the vote. The results are unofficial. Novack, is a retired federal employee who was first elected to the City of Pewaukee Common Council in 2006 and lost her re-election bid in 2009. She was elected to the council again in 2010 and said she planned to run for another term unless, if elected as county clerk,  it interferes with the county job. Novack is the second City of Pewaukee alderman to serve dual elected roles in recent years. Ald. Mike Hasslinger served as …

Election Preview: Wisconsin 33rd State Senate District

Two Waukesha County legislators – Paul Farrow and Chris Kapenga – are running for vacant seat in a special primary election on Nov. 6.

The road to Tuesday’s election has been a long partisan battle as voters will pick either Mitt Romney or Barack Obama for president. But for some in the Sussex and Waukesha area, one race will be between two Republican candidates. State reps. Paul Farrow and Chris Kapenga are running for the 33rd Senate District seat that was vacated earlier this year by former Sen. Rich Zipperer. Zipperer was appointed as the deputy chief of staff and senior counsel for Gov. Scott Walker in July. Because the election is to fill the remainder of Zipperer’s term – through 2014 – a special election will be held Dec. 4. While Tuesday’s election is a Republican primary, there is no Democratic candidate, which signals for a win for whoever emerges from Tuesday’…

Vrakas Seeks Funds to Study, Upgrade Elections Equipment

Capital funding would "increase efficiency, accuracy and timeliness of vote reporting," Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas says.

Waukesha County should budget funds next year to study and potentially upgrade its election equipment, Waukesha County Executive Dan Vrakas said Tuesday. Vrakas included $70,000 in the capital budget he plans to introduce Friday, according to a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel report. Vrakas said in a press release that he wants to study ways to better automate election results and avoid manual counting by municipalities. "Waukesha County is a rapidly growing County and in recent years the number of reporting units in the County has increased," Vrakas said. "This, coupled with the collecting, tallying and reporting vote totals, have made the process cumbersome. The goal is to automate and streamline the system as much as possible to prevent …

Tommy Thompson Earns GOP Nomination For U.S. Senate Race

It was a tight race throughout the evening, but Wisconsin voters chose to go with a familiar face to challenge U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin in November.

There was only one thing certain heading into the U.S. Senate Republican primary election Tuesday — and it was that nothing was certain. Throughout the state’s five elections this year, perhaps no election gave voters such a perplexing choice as the four GOP candidates for U.S. Senate. Every candidate received an endorsement of some sort, and a clear favorite never emerged. But by the end of the night, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson did something he had done many times before — win an election. Final unofficial results from the Associated Press show that Thompson posted a 3 percentage-point victory over his top rival, hedge fund manager and businessman Eric Hovde. Finishing in the second tier were state Assembly Speaker Jeff …

Ryan Returns to the Badger State

Rep. Paul Ryan - just two days on the campaign trail with Mitt Romney - returned to thousands of supporters in Wisconsin Sunday during a homecoming rally in Waukesha.

There was no question Sunday: Presumptive Republican candidate Mitt Romney energized a Wisconsin conservative voting base by adding Wisconsin native Rep. Paul Ryan as his running mate. Bumper-to-bumper traffic snaked along Highway 164 in Pewaukee all the way to the gates of the Waukesha County Expo Center. An estimated 13,000 supporters gathered to get a glimpse of the new Republican duo they hope to send to the White House in November. “What a homecoming for a terrific guy. I guess you think I made the right choice?” Romney asked the crowd – which responded with roars of approval. “I know I did.” Romney announced Ryan would be his running mate Saturday in Virginia, and the pair immediately hit the ground running making two campaign stops …

@Tim -- By 'haters' do you mean the lady who asked Paul Ryan if he planned to do away with Medicare and got hauled away by the police? It's a legitimate questions. Or do you mean the person who asked him about drought relief for the farmers and was told that Ryan just wanted to focus on enjoying the fair? (That reminded me of Martha Stewart and 'focusing' on her salad.)   more ›

Another Election Night Snafu in Waukesha County

County Clerk Nickolaus under the spotlight again as changes in election procedures mean lengthy delay in tallying votes throughout the county.

Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus, who has been under fire for past election snafus, is at the center of attention again because new procedures in tallying votes resulted in lengthy delays in getting election results Tuesday. Nickolaus, who garnered national attention last April when her office made a mistake that flipped the outcome of a hotly contested state Supreme Court race, said she introduced new procedures Tuesday to follow guidelines set forth by the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, which oversees elections in the state. As a result, some elections results were not posted on the county's website until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Her office, which said it would post local results online, posted few results and asked the media …
