Fighting Sussex Fires One Brat at a Time

The Sussex Fire Auxiliary needs you to get hungry for brats on Saturday and excited about making a difference in the village.

Everyone loves a hearty, grilled brat, so why not make your next Wisconsin staple one that could potentially save a life?

The Sussex Fire Auxiliary is holding a brat-fry fundraiser at the Sussex on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to raise money for the fire department. The group, which was formed by former Sussex Deputy Chief Cathy Selerski, bands together to raise money for life-saving tools that sometimes don’t make Sussex’s budget.

“I retired as the deputy chief at the fire department in May after 29 years,” said Selerski . “And I knew it was time. I’d been talking about starting an auxiliary group for the fire department for years. Lisbon has an auxiliary, and they do so much to help out.”

From snagging bags of McDonalds for firefighters working on a blaze to funding the purchase of a “jaws of life”-type apparatus for ripping open mangled cars, the Auxiliary group uses the money from fundraisers to fully support the Sussex men and women who put their lives in danger.

And Ginny and Frank D’Amico know all too well how important these fundraisers can be. Frank, a Sussex volunteer firefighter, was the of his father’s hit-and-run accident in June. Funding from the Auxiliary may have helped save his father’s life, who coincidentally turned 85-years-old on July 27. He is still .

Ginny, an active member of the fundraising group, filled Patch in on Saturday’s brat fry. She says the group is doing a bit of general fundraising for the fire department so they can keep saving lives, so come hungry!
