Morning Rain Doesn't Lift Sussex's Fireworks & Burning Ban

Sussex residents who may have gotten hopeful after hearing the thunder this morning will be disappointed to hear the village’s is still in effect.

That means residents are strictly prohibited from burning things like a brush pile or campfires. In addition, police will be on the lookout for people lighting off fireworks for the Fourth of July, giving citations to anyone who is caught.

“Although fireworks are often considered to be an important part of the Independence Day celebration, please keep in mind the danger to neighbors and surrounding natural areas during a drought” the said in a statement. “Police will be monitoring the Village for illegal discharge of fireworks and will issue tickets to violators.”

However, Sussex’s at on Wednesday night is still moving forward as planned, with village firefighters working the event to pounce on any mishaps. But according to the National Weather Service, upcoming rain might ease residents’ nerves.

• Isolated showers and thunderstorms after 4 p.m. Partly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph becoming southwest in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent.

Tonight

• Scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 7 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 77. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Independence Day

• Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 97. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the afternoon.

Wednesday Night

• Partly cloudy, with a low around 75. Calm wind.

Thursday

• Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 102. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the afternoon.

Thursday Night

• Partly cloudy, with a low around 76. South wind around 5 mph.

But the possibility of rain isn’t easing some residents’ nerves. Sussex Patch reader Dyan Oleson Brinkman commented on our Facebook page Tuesday morning with serious concerns about the safety of the annual fireworks show.

“I would like to know what your readers think about Sussex still putting on the fireworks tomorrow,” wrote Brinkman. “I seriously can't believe that the fire chief is going to risk the homes that are very near where they light the fireworks off from! YIKES”
