Hamilton's Nate Goecks Shoots 78 at State in 1st Round

Golfer is taking on the state's best at University Ridge in Verona.

Hamilton High School senior Nate Goecks stands tied for 28th after one day of the WIAA boys state golf championships in Madison.

Goecks shot 6-over-par 78 at University Ridge, the home course of the Wisconsin Badgers. Double-bogeys on a pair of par-5 holes hurt; he did have his lone birdie on another of the par-5 holes.

Eddie Wajda of Brookfield Central and RJ Budd of Sauk Prairie each shot 3-under 69 to tie for the first-round lead. The second round is Tuesday.
