One senior is proving academic and athletic success can be one in the same.

Varsity golfer Leah Stapleman was named an Academic All-State honoree by the Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin (GCAW) for the girls’ golf season that recently ended. Only 155 female golfers in Wisconsin are being honored this year.

To qualify, the student-athletes must meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average
  • Participation in at least 75 percent of varsity matches
  • At least a sophomore standing

Although students must have a 3.5 GPA to be considered, the 155 girls averaged a 3.852, an impressive score considering they all are competing in varsity athletics. In addition, 13 of the top 20 finishers in the state tournament are academic all-state honorees.

High school golf coaches formed the GCAW in 1986 to help build Wisconsin's reputation for developing quality junior players by promoting golf in our schools and communities. Besides honoring both boys and girls who succeed as student athletes, the association also selects an annual All-State team for boys and girls based on their playing ability.

A newly established award honoring the high school team with the highest cumulative GPA will be announced on March 1, 2012.
