Reading Books to Grant Wishes

Maple Avenue Elementary students raise money to give joy to children through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Know a great kid who made Eagle Scout or did your local soccer team take the championship? They may be our next Patch Whiz Kid honoree.

Each week, Menomonee Falls Patch and Sussex Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens, and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

We want to hear about these amazing children and teens, and select one each week as the Patch Whiz Kid.  Submit your nomination in our comment box below or e-mail the information to Editor Mark Maley.

Accomplishments:  These 27 students have just donated $50 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the nation’s largest wish-granting organization for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

This is the class’ second donation this year. The class donated $50 to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in January.

They have raised the money using the “Buck a Book” program — for each book the students read they bring in $1 or whatever they can from home. Once $50 is collected, the class decides where to donate the money.  The reading incentive program encourages students to read on their own time and raise money for a cause they deem important.

Key to Awesomeness:  Since the start of the “Buck a Book” Program in 2006-07, fifth-graders in Garley’s classes have donated $500 to various organizations.
