Powerful Pennies: Maple Avenue Fundraiser Provides Scholarships

Elementary school's Pennies for Education Drive benefits Hamilton High School grads.

Can you spare a penny or two?

That's the question students and staff at will be asking this month as part of the school's 14th annual Pennies for Education Drive.

What makes the fundraiser unique is that proceeds won't directly benefit the school. Instead, the money  is used to provide scholarships to Hamilton High School seniors.

Last year, the effort raised nearly $2,000, which was enough to provide scholarships to two Hamilton graduates who attended Maple Avenue, Sarah Vowels and Emily Noack.

Students are asked to put pennies in a Ziplock and put a note inside with the student and teacher's names. Classrooms that raise $100 or more worth of pennies will be treated to an ice cream party, those who raise $250 or more will get a pizza party.

Students can see how various classes are doing in raising money by checking out a tally sheet on the bulletin board outside the school office.
