Photos: Checkmate! Woodside Students Hold Chess Club Tournament

Almost 30 students from the elementary school faced off against 11 other schools during the club's second chess club tournament.

Students at held their second chess club tournament in history on Saturday with 29 students competing to call "Checkmate!"

More than 80 children from 12 different schools attended the day-long tournament held at the elementary school, and parent organizer Tracy Dow said after this year's success, the team will probably host another tournament next year.

"The whole competition is really neat. I never thought I'd be doing chess tournaments on Saturdays."

"It was a huge success for us," Dow said. "Both our K-3 and K-6 teams from Woodside placed third in the competition, and two kids from Templeton formed their own team and took first in the K-12 division. The whole competition is really neat. I never thought I'd be doing chess tournaments on Saturdays," Dow laughed.

Dow said this is the fifth year the Woodside Chess Club has been running, and she got involved after her own kids joined. Although only 29 participated in the tournament, Dow said the club has 45 students signed up.

In addition, parents aren't allowed in the gym where the students compete. To avoid distractions, only four judges and the tournament director can be near the kids while they compete, so thank you to Tracy Dow for contributing the photos.
