Hamilton National Honor Society Helps More Than 800 Needy Families

The group raised thousands of dollars for a Thanksgiving meal.

National Honor Society got in the holiday spirit by raising $2,000 to help with the Hunger Task Force’s Thanksgiving meal program this year.

The students used the money to buy 880 half-gallon bottles of juice to accompany the Task Force’s meals for needy Milwaukee-area families. The families applied for the help and will soon be given enough food to feed a family of four for a week.

Steve Akin, a math teacher and National Honor Society advisor, says that means the group helped to feed at least 3,200 people this Thanksgiving.

“That’s what it looks like when we work together,” Akin said. “We all win.”

More than two-dozen students spent an entire day unloading approximately 25,000 pounds of donated food from cars and trucks. Also, in the spirit of giving, residents also donated $900 that day to the NHS which was then re-donated to the Hunger Task Force.
