Village Board Preview: Signs at Village Entrances, Equipment Purchase

Masonry sign like those near Sussex Village Park preferred but not allowed near highway; wooden signs an option.

The large signs that include the Sussex logo and welcome visitors to the village may soon be replaced with updated versions with a refreshed appearance, if village staff can work out a design that satisfies state and county highway authorities.

A recommendation on the signs made by the Sussex Public Works Committee is expected to be approved Tuesday night by the full Village Board.

The committee directed staff to pursue a masonry design for two locations - near Armory Park on Maple Avenue and near Woodside Elementary on Good Hope Road - since they are local arterials under control of the village.

At three other locations, however, committee members were told by Eric Nitschke, director of public works, that "wooden signs mounted on breakaway poles" would likely be the only option allowed.

Because masonry so close to the road surface is considered unsafe, signs at Highway 164, Highway 74 and on Silver Spring Road would be updated and replaced with wooden versions.

Quad Graphics has made a gift of $50,000 toward the updated signage through the Windemere Foundation.

Also forwarded by the Public Works Committee for consideration by the Village Board is the $30,000 purchase of a skid loader.
