Sussex Inks Bugline Trail Relocation Agreement

The county and Mammoth Springs developers have agreed to a land swap to reroute the Bugline Tail.

Relocating the Bugline Trail for the Mammoth Springs project was one the many challenges to overcome for the extensive development to move forward. On Tuesday, village leaders brought a resolution to that issue.

The Bugline Trail runs straight through Arthur Sawall’s proposed Mammoth Springs residential and retail development, which broke ground Monday. In order to move forward, the Bugline Trail needed to be rerouted. Rerouting is a complicated endeavor since the trail was built with federal and state dollars.

Waukesha County used a Federal Traffic Enhancement Grant to pave the Bugline Trail, which prohibits real estate transactions during the term of the grant. The grant’s term ends December 2014.

However, the Village Board approved a relocation agreement with Mammoth Springs developers and Waueksha County for the trail. The county will provide Mammoth Springs developers with the proper land use permit to set up the trail detour. 

The Bugline Trail detour route will start at the south end of Old Brooke Square Park utilizing the concrete walk, which extends north through the park to the intersection of Main Street and Silver Spring Drive.

The route will then cross Main Street and continue east along the concrete sidewalk on the north side of Main Street until it reconnects with the existing trail roughly 150 feet west of the intersection of Main Street and Waukesha Avenue. 

Mammoth developers will be responsible for constructing the trail, installing signage, and maintaining the trail. Then, the land will be exchanged with the county.

Sawall purchased the property in January 2010. Sawall’s plans include construction of roughly 150 high-end apartment units with retail buildings mixed in. The first residential building is slated to open in February of 2014.
