Answering some FAQs on Main Street Reconstruction

Piggly Wiggly hosted the design team looking for more resident input on the project in the second of four public events on Friday.

Project managers working on the Main Street Reconstruction Project held their second public input meeting at the on Friday from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. in hopes of getting more feedback about the street.

Must like on Oct. 26, the team displayed a huge map of Main Street and asked residents to put stickers on the map with a number corresponding to their comments.

This meeting, however, was more informal. Set up at the entrance of the grocery store, the project managers attempted to lure passers-by without a lengthy presentation. Instead, they handed out a 'Frequently Asked Questions' sheet about the redesign, compiling eight of the most common inquiries residents had during the previous meeting.

2. Why is the project being initiated now?

The Village Board and staff have identified the street as a prime location for redevelopment. The opportunities it presents and location to major highways makes Sussex one of the best locations in Waukesha County. The reconstruction is now a part of the Downtown Design and Development Plan.

3. What are the limits of the project?

Only one mile of Main Street will be redesigned, running between Locust Street and Waukesha Avenue.

4. What is the project's timeline?

The rest of 2011 will be used for public information gathering and the presentation of alternative designs. In 2012 the design team will nail down the development. Construction plans will be drawn up in 2013, and the actual construction will take place between 2015 and 2018.

5. How would the design for the project be developed?

The Village selected Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc (SEH) to help with the planning, design and development of the project. Over the next year, the Village and SEH will be holding four meetings (two more after Friday's) to get public input on what needs to change.

6. What are the anticipated funding sources?

Sussex plans to fund the project through things like state and federal road aid, tax incremental financing (TIF), grants and other funds. Construction costs are expected to be officially determined in mid 2012.

7. What type of changes might we see for Main Street?

Everything is dependent on public input, however changes may include new accommodations for pedestrians and bikes, easier access to businesses, intersection changes, better street lighting and aesthetic improvements.

8. How can I stay informed and involved in the project design and construction?

Other than reading Sussex Patch, you can always visit the village website for more information. If there are specific questions not addressed on the website, contact the village directly.

The design team hasn't chosen a date for the next public input meeting, but they expect it to be held at the in Sussex.
