Novack to Replace Nickolaus as Waukesha County Clerk

City of Pewaukee alderwoman Kathleen Novack will replace embattled Waukesha Coutny Clerk Kathy Nickolaus, who decided to not seek re-election.

City of Pewaukee Alderwoman Kathleen Novack will be the new clerk of Waukesha County.

Novack, 62, won 71 percent of the vote, or 155,430 votes, in Tuesday's county clerk race, beating Town of Lisbon business owner Jessie Read, 52, who collected 63,575 votes, or 29 percent of the vote. The results are unofficial.

"I'm just very, very excited about starting this new phase in my life," Novack said. "And it really feels good about the votes, the support I got not just from friends and acquaintances, but the actual voters themselves. It was very heartwarming to see."

Novack, is a retired federal employee who was first elected to the City of Pewaukee Common Council in 2006 and lost her re-election bid in 2009. She was elected to the council again in 2010 and said she planned to run for another term unless, if elected as county clerk,  it interferes with the county job.

Novack is the second City of Pewaukee alderman to serve dual elected roles in recent years. Ald. Mike Hasslinger served as Waukesha County register of deeds for 38 years until he decided to not seek re-election to that position in 2008.

Novack replaces embattled Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus, who came under fire in recent years due to several election debacles, one of which changed the results of the highly contentious 2010 Wisconsin Supreme Court race.

Novack said Nickolaus called her late last night after it was apparent she would win the election and offered to help in the transition of power in the office, which Novack said was very gracious. Before taking office, Novack said she also would like to meet with all the area municipal clerks so she can start to build a foundation with the people she will be working with.

Novack will serve a four year term.
