New Crack Appears in Village Hall Floor
Village administrator says employees given OK to keep using facility.
Sussex inspectors have given the OK for employees to continue using the building despite the recent appearance of a large crack in the first floor of the building.
Village Administrator Jeremy Smith said the new crack in the floor is due to the building settling, but a structural engineer said there is no reason the building can't continue to be used.
“He doesn’t think it’s going to get any worse and it’s not going to fail,” Smith said. “With the cost of what it would cost to fix it, we’re better off doing nothing at this point.

Smith said the crack first appeared about two weeks ago and Village Hall staff immediately contacted the structural engineer and architect to investigate the problem.
The building was built in the 1920s, and Smith said it was last remodeled about 20 years ago.

Smith said a and will come out with a report by December recommending either remodeling the structure or building a new facility.
Once the recommendation comes out, Smith said village leaders will weigh options to proceed with either renovation or replacement of the building in the next seven to 10 years.
