Uncontested Village, School Board Elections Set for Spring

The 98th State Assembly district race is the most intriguing race on the ballot for voters. A primary is set for Feb 19.

There's no contest for the Sussex Village Board and School Board elections in spring.

However, residents in Sussex will vote in a primary election in February, and it’s for the 98th State Assembly seat vacated by Rep. Paul Farrow.

Farrow was elected to represent the 33rd Senate District during a Dec. 4 special election. Five Republican candidates have emerged to run in a primary to be held Feb. 19.

Those candidates are:

  • Matt Morzy
  • Adam Neylon
  • Todd Greenwald
  • Jeanne Tarantino (approved)
  • Ed Baumann

At the local level in Sussex, the elections don’t offer much choice for voters. Village Board Trustee Jim Batzko will not seek another term in spring. Both Jason Wegner and Timothy Dietrich submitted their papers to run again. Newcomer Matt Petricca will fill Batzko’s vacated seat, as he was the only other candidate to submit his papers.

Two others, Ryan Schwab and Chris Meagher, took out papers to run but failed to return their signatures by the Jan. 2 deadline.

On the School Board, both incumbents Gabe Kolesari and Gerald Schmitz will run uncontested. Kolesari represents the Village of Sussex seat, and Schmitz holds the at-large seat.

Several state offices will also be on the election in spring. Those offices to be elected include Superintendent of Public Instruction, Supreme Court Justice, Court of Appeals and Circuit Court Judge.
