UPDATE: Could Your Name Be on Petitions Without Permission? Check Them

toward the 540,000 total needed to spark a recall election of Gov. Scott Walker. Undoubtedly, some of those will be rejected and one website is set up to add some citizen oversight to that process.

Verify the Recall is a website asking Walker supporters to enter their name and address in order to weed out potential fraudulent signatures. In theory, if a Wisconsin resident didn’t sign a recall petition but their name appears, the person would be notified.

The two Wisconsin Tea Party groups behind the website, We the People of the Republic and Wisconsin Grandsons of Liberty, say they will provide instructions on how fraudulent signatures can be challenged.

However, Graeme Zielinski of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin says given this group's track record, it sounds like bad news. He says the Wisconsin Grandsons of Liberty have been linked on multiple occasions with the Wisconsin Republican Party, and they're just trying to "smear the process."

"This is a group that admitted to being a part of a voter caging scheme, and this is a group that was talking about suppressing votes and voter intimidation," Zielinski said. "These are bad actors and they’re up to mischief and up to no good... They’re the guys that do the dirty work for Scott Walker so he doesn’t get his fingerprints on it."

However, that's not stopping Verify the Recall from gathering volunteers to verify each and every signature submitted. The group says it will eliminate duplicate signatures and irregularities once the list is released by the Government Accountability Board.

“In the last few weeks, there has been a public outcry to build a system to check the submitted signatures after learning that the Government Accountability Board (GAB) will assume all signatures are valid unless challenged as otherwise,” says the group’s website. “The integrity of Wisconsin's elections and associated processes are at stake; free and honest elections — the cornerstone of our political process — are being threatened.”

The group says they do not endorse any political party of candidate, and they are solely doing this to uphold the integrity of Wisconsin voters.
