Stolen Cell Phone Sent to Sussex Woman Who Now Faces Charges

The 21-year-old woman told a New Berlin police officer she found a cell phone stolen during a burglary in her mailbox.

A Sussex woman is accused of receiving a stolen cell phone that was taken during a burglary to a New Berlin cell phone store in October.

Jamie C. Lupo, 21, was charged Wednesday in Waukesha County Circuit Court with receiving stolen property. If convicted, she faces up to nine months in jail and $10,000 in fines.

New Berlin police officers were called to the store in October after an employee noticed $118 was missing from the cash box. They reviewed security footage and saw a person take the cash from the cash box and two cell phones from the back storage rooms, according to the criminal complaint.

The manager suspected Lupo, who still had a key to the business despite no longer showing up for work. However, Lupo was not the person in the video because she was skinnier than the suspect, the complaint states.

However, police tracked the serial numbers and discovered Lupo had activated one of the missing phones, the complaint states. A detective tried to talk to her, but she did not respond to his calls.

The detective asked her probation agent to place her on a hold so she could talk to the detective. She told the officer she stopped showing up to work weeks before the burglary because she was having problems dealing with a family situation.

Lupo told the detective she found the phone in her mailbox and she thought some was giving her a phone that she had lost. However, she discovered after activating the phone that it wasn’t her old phone, according to the complaint.
