Sussex Hit-and-Run Victim Remains Hospitalized; Suspect Still at Large

Police are still investigating the that left 84-year-old Sussex resident Camillo D’Amico critically injured in June, but his family’s spirits remain high.

D’Amico’s son, Frank, a Sussex volunteer firefighter, was one of the first to the scene near the corner of Good Hope Road and Maple Avenue on June 13. His wife, Ginny, says Frank is “doing good” after seeing his dad following the accident, but Camillo’s journey after being hit has been long.

“Camillo’s doing a lot better, and he hopefully will be able to come home in two weeks,” Ginny said. “Since getting to the hospital, he’s had three surgeries. He’s had skin grafts. He’s had an infection in his leg. He’s had to get a blood transfusion. He’s been through a lot.”

But while the D’Amicos remain positive, few substantial clues have led toward the man or woman who ran down the Sussex man during his morning walk. With no witnesses, Waukesha County Sheriff's Lt. Torin Misko says clues and leads are drying up.

“It’s still under investigation, and we have a detective assigned to the case,” Misko said Wednesday. “We followed up on all the leads we initially got, but not a lot has panned out. Now we’re on the light end of good leads to follow up on, and we just don’t have a lot of information.”

Misko said he’ll take any information someone has, and he’d be more than happy to have a conversation with any potential suspects just to cross them off the list.

“He’s just excited to come home and have some wine. He’s this little Italian man who wants to come home to his family and have wine and some spaghetti."

However, it’s more than just police and the D’Amicos who are hoping for leads. Patch readers commented after the hit-and-run story broke, saying Camillo is a staple in the Sussex community and wishing him well.

“This is HEARTBREAKING!!” wrote Sussex Patch reader Kristi in . “I have seen him walking EVERYDAY for the past few years, and he made me smile every morning. Frank is correct in saying whomever did this is a coward – this is awful. Thought and prayers go out to the D'Amico family. <3”

Ginny and Frank D’Amico say they thank everyone for their prayers and support during this difficult time, and they’re excited to bring Camillo back home to his family in two weeks.

In fact, with his family at his bedside, the D’Amicos say they’re ready to celebrate Camillo’s 85th birthday on Friday. Ginny says they’re planning to bring him a cake in the hospital and wishing him a happy birthday.

“He’s just excited to come home and have some wine,” Ginny said. “He’s this little Italian man who wants to come home to his family and have wine and some spaghetti… We’re just happy that he’s here and we can celebrate his birthday on Friday.”
