Rescue Workers to Showcase Their Skills at Sussex Classic Car Show

Local fire departments will practice their crash scene rescue skills in a competition at the Piston and Rod Show on Saturday at Village Park.

For the second year in a row, the Sussex Lions Club’s Piston and Rod Show will feature an Advanced Vehicle Extrication Challenge from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at on Main Street and Village Drive. 

Six fire departments - Sussex, Lisbon, Lannon, Hartland, North Lake and Merton - will be compete in a double pit where junk cars have been mocked up into crash scenes. 

Every hour, starting at 9 a.m., two teams will rescuing dummies from the mock crash scenes.  An announcer will give the crowd a play by play about what’s going on.

“The fire departments will be scored by an expert judge in safety, efficiency and speed,” said Jeff Carlson, first vice president of the Lions Club. 

There will be two types of competition – with power tools and without them. The event provides rescue workers with the opportunity to practice their skills and educate the public about what they do in case of an emergency.

Organizers expect about 1,500 spectators to attend the event.

The Piston and Rod Show will also feature around 300 vehicles from collectors around southeastern Wisconsin representing a large variety of categories, including stock and modified cars from each decade.

To display a vehicle in the show, preregister on the website, or sign up at the event on Saturday. The entry fee is $8 in advance or $10 on the day of the show. A total of 29 trophies will be awarded.

The event also will feature an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 7 to 10:30 a.m. The a pancake breakfast will be $4, and a pancake, eggs, hash browns and sausage breakfast will cost $6. 

There will also be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle, where half of the proceeds benefit the Lions Club, and half be awarded to the winner. 

During the show, there will be a flea market that will feature a large variety of items from collector model cars to food products. 

Admission and parking for the event are both free, and the show will be held rain or shine.
