Milwaukee Man Caught Speeding in Sussex Faces 4th OWI

Suspect ran a stop sign at Clover Drive and Maple Avenue while driving drunk early Sunday.

A 27-year-old Milwaukee man is facing felony drunk driving charges after he was caught speeding and running a stop sign in Sussex early Sunday morning.

Wade D. Smith was charged in Monday with one count of fourth offense operating while intoxicated within five years, and one count of operating a motor vehicle after revocation of his license. If convicted, he faces up to seven years in prison and $12,500 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 5:30 a.m. Sunday, a Waukesha County sheriff’s deputy spotted Smith driving more than 50 mph in a 25 mph speed zone on Maple Avenue, and then continue through a four-way stop intersection at Clover Drive. The deputy then caught up to Smith and pulled him over, but Smith didn’t pull to the side of the road before stopping.

Smith told the officer he was coming from a party where he drank three to five beers before leaving. His speech was slurred, he failed a field sobriety test and had a blood alcohol level of 0.125 at the time of the incident.

He was previously convicted of OWI in 2009, January 2010 and September 2010. Smith is currently free on $2,500 cash bail.
