Man Caught Allegedly Smoking Marijuana in Sussex Parking Lot

Suspect and another person are in a car in an apartment complex parking lot when someone calls the cops on them for smoking drugs.

A 20-year-old Sussex man faces charges after he was allegedly caught smoking marijuana inside a parked car Monday.

Mark A. Perry Jr. was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court Tuesday with one count of possession of THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. If convicted, he faces up to six months in jail and $1,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

At 1:48 a.m. Monday, Waukesha County sheriff deputies were called to the parking lot of an apartment complex in the N6400 block of Pewaukee Road on the report of someone smoking marijuana.

When they arrived, they found Perry and another man sitting in the car. When the deputy contacted him, Perry opened the door and the deputy found a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside.

The deputy called for a K-9 unit, which found a marijuana bud on the back seat of the car.

He’s currently being held in Waukesha County Jail on a $500 signature bond.

PROHIBITION IS A DIRECT THREAT TO PUBLIC SAFETY: "The “war on drugs” has also generated indirect costs that many researchers contend have undermined public safety. The federal government has prioritized spending and grants for drug task forces and widespread drug interdiction efforts that often target low-level drug dealing. These highly organized and coordinated efforts have been very labor intensive for local law enforcement agencies with some unanticipated consequences for investigation of other crimes. The focus on drugs is believed to have redirected law enforcement resources that have resulted in more drunk driving, and decreased investigation and enforcement of violent crime laws. In Illinois, a 47% increase in drug arrests corresponded with a 22% decrease in arrests for drunk driving. Florida researchers have similarly linked the focus on low level drug arrests with an increase in the serious crime index." —Drug Policy, Criminal Justice and Mass Imprisonment, by Bryan Stevenson
