Deputies Helped Rescue Wounded Victims in Azana Spa Shooting

Three Waukesha County deputies were honored Wednesday by the Waukesha Optimist Club for their response to the mass shooting in Brookfield.

Waukesha County deputies Mike Doud, Robert Faith and Juan Rodriguez were among some of the first law enforcement officers at the Azana Spa & Salon shooting that left three women dead, as well as the suspect.

They didn’t know where the shooter, Radcliffe Houghton, was, if he was even still alive or if he would open fire on them.

Still, they didn’t hesitate.

“In response to a dynamic and chaotic situation, deputies Faith, Rodriguez and Doud distinguished themselves by demonstrating courage while entering the Azana Spa,” said Sheriff Dan Trawicki. “Deputies Faith, Rodriguez and Doud and other officers were part of the initial entry phase.

“During this phase, deputies Faith, Rodriguez and Doud helped to secure the building while aiding in the evacuation of multiple wounded civilians. … Deputies Faith, Rodriguez and Doud’s bravery, determination and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest tradition of law enforcement and reflect great credit upon themselves and the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department.”

The three deputies were honored Wednesday by the Waukesha Optimist Club during its Respect for Law program. Typically, the club honors one deputy and one police officer each May during National Police Officer Week.

“These officers are also being awarded this nomination and this deputy of the year for a cumulative effort in their career as well,” Trawicki said. “It is not like these three officers had one incident highlighted their career. These officers have had three fantastic careers.

“I have worked with them since the day they started. It has been my joy and privilege and honor to have them be part of our organization. They have just done an outstanding job every single day throughout their careers.”
