Mom Accused of Having Sex with 13-Year-Old Free on Bond

Authorities say 24-year-old mother of three treated 13-year-old like a boyfriend.

A Sussex woman on several occasions last year was released from custody Wednesday on a $100,000 signature bond.

Brittany Barcus, 24, made her initial appearance in Waukesha County Circuit Court on three counts of sexually assaulting a child under 16 years of age. Because she faces more than 100 years in prison if convicted, Court Commissioner Laura Lau said either a high cash bail or signature bond signed by both Barcus and a co-signer are needed.

Barcus’ mother co-signed the $100,000 signature bond shortly after the hearing in order to keep her daughter out of jail while awaiting trial.

Barcus had sex with the boy on at least one occasion and performed sexual acts with him on other occasions while her three children were sleeping in another room in her Sussex apartment in 2010.

Neighbors reported Barcus and the victim would walk around like they were dating and the two were seen cuddling on the couch. A neighbor reported the possible sexual assault after Barcus showed her a picture of the victim on her cell phone wearing a little boy’s clothing with his stomach showing.

Barcus, who according to court records now resides in Hartland, will have a preliminary hearing Oct. 21.

Her attorney, Theodore Mazza, denied the charges, saying she’s innocent and the case reminds him that “no good deed goes unpunished.”
