Just Call Me an ALDI Aficionada

Don't wait to discover low prices and incredible value at your local ALDI Food Market.

I’ve been counting down the days to the opening of the new ALDI Food Market in Pewaukee. Thursday, Oct. 20th is the grand-opening, and the timing couldn’t be better. Our breakfast cereal options are running dangerously low.

Have you been to ALDI's? Have you seen their cereal selection? Has your jaw dropped when you see the price per box? I dare you to go shopping at ALDI and not fill up your cart with half-a-dozen boxes of cereal. Then go check out the price for a gallon of milk. It’s always at least a dollar cheaper than the regular grocery store price.

After shopping at ALDI’s for the first time, a friend of mine called it “the dollar store for groceries.”

But it’s not just the low prices; it’s the value that has made me an ALDI aficionada. And better than those big-box membership stores, you get that value without having to buy everything in super-sized bulk.

During a typical shopping trip I’ll load up the cart with: dried fruit, cashews, almonds, honey wheat pretzels, a bag of croutons, two boxes of brownie mix, semi-sweet chocolate chips, shredded coconut, boxes and boxes of cereal, two to three gallons of milk (I stock up on milk, but you can buy them individually), a dozen eggs, a pound of butter, whipped cream cheese, humus, a package of string cheese, a few blocks of Colby-Jack cheese, fresh spinach, mushrooms, green peppers, bananas, carrots, fresh boneless chicken breast and ground turkey, a couple cartons of ice cream, a few jars of spaghetti sauce (their Grandessa signature sauce is unsweetened and my family’s preference over any other pre-made sauce), apple juice and a bag of mini bagels.

This full cart will last us a good 10 days and the total is always under $100. No coupons necessary.

Before you dash out the door to your local ALDI, you’ll want to be sure to bring along three essential items:

  1. A quarter (to deposit into a shopping cart).
  2. Cash or debit card with PIN (personal checks and credit cards are not accepted).
  3. Plenty of those fashionable and green-minded tote bags to pack up your groceries (regular plastic and paper bags are available for a nominal fee).
